    [01] Kuwait-Cyprus Parliamentary Friendship Group - Visit

    Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNÁ) -- The chairman and members of the Kuwait-Cyprus Parliamentary Friendship Group arrive here Thursday for a five-day visit, at the invitation of the Cyprus House of Representatives.

    During their stay the Kuwaiti parliamentarians will meet House President Demetris Christofias, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kassoulides, Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Cyprus- Kuwait Friendship Group Nicos Anastasiades and Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Human Rights Aristos Chrysostomou.     [02] Italy - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNÁ) -- Gustavo Selva, Chairman of Italy's parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, has stated that the Italian parliament follows closely the situation in Cyprus and expressed desire for enhancing bilateral relations with Cyprus in view of the island's accession to the European Uunion.

    Selva, who met Cyprus' Ambassador to Italy Alexandros Zenon, said that strengthened relations between Italy and Cyprus would contribute to the stability, security and economic and social progress of countries in the Mediterranean region. CNÁ/MK/GP/2001

    [03] Vassiliou - Brussels

    Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus Chief Negotiator with the European Union George Vassiliou is in Brussels to meet EU officials with whom he will discuss, among other issues, European Commission's 2001 Progress Report on Cyprus accession, expected to be released at the beginning of November.

    Vassiliou, accompanied by members of the Cyprus negotiating team for accession to the EU, will meet Commissioner responsible for Common Market Frederik Bolkestein, General Director of the European Commission's General Directorate on Enlargement Eneko Landaburu and EU Chief negotiator for the accession of Cyprus Leopold Maurer.     [04] Cyprus House President - PACE President - Cyprus - Visit

    by Gregory Savva Strasbourg, Sep 26 (CNA) -- President of Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) Lord Russell Johnston will visit Cyprus at the end of November, Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias, who addressed here yesterday the Assembly's autumn session, told CNA.

    Christofias, who on the sidelines of the session met Lord Johnston, Council of Europe's Secretary General Walter Schwimmer, President of European Court of Human Rights Luzious Wildhaber and leaders of PACE political groups, said his visit to Strasbourg was a "good opportunity" to promote the Cyprus question and indicate Turkey's and Turkish Cypriot leaders Rauf Denktash's responsibilities for the protracted impasse in the Cyprus problem.     [05] Cyprus - Census

    Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus authorities will conduct as from next Tuesday, October 2, the Republic's 6th census, which is the 13th census to be conducted on the island since 1881.

    Director of Cyprus Statistical Services Pambis Filippides told a press conference the census would be conducted at the suggestion of EU Statistical Service, Eurostat, which urged all EU countries to conduct censuses in 2001. CNA/MK/GP/2001

    [06] Interior Minister - Civil defence - Biological war

    Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNÁ) -- Cyprus Interior Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou has said the island's authorities are looking into ways by which Cyprus will be better prepared to deal with a possible biological or chemical war following a World Health Organisation warning.

    The minister said the island's civil defence has some 150 gas masks. Soon it will acquire another 850. He noted that the Fire Brigade, the National Guard (army) and other services also have such equipment. CNÁ/MK/GP/2001
