    [02] Social Democrats - Electoral Conference - Candidates

    Nicosia, Jul 22 (CNA) -- The two presidential hopefuls in the contest for the leadership of the Social Democrats Movement (KISOS), Yiannakis Omirou and Takis Hadjidemetriou, had one thing in common as they outlined their views to some 2,500 delegates just before voting started for the new leadership - both expressed faith in the future of the party and each pledged his support for the successful candidate.

    The conference will elect a president, two deputy presidents and 87 members for the Central Committee. Results are due to be announced in the evening. CNA MM/ÁÁR/2001

    [03] House President - Cyprus peace talks

    Nicosia, Jul 22 (CNA) -- House President Demetris Christofias has warned that any future peace talks for a settlement will yield no results unless Turkish Cypriot leader returns to the negotiating table without his long standing demand for two separate states in Cyprus.

    Christofias called on the international community, and in particular Britain and the US, to put their verbal support for a united Cyprus into action and address themselves to Ankara seeking a constructive stance to facilitate a solution.

    Nicosia, Jul 22 (CNA) -- Yiannakis Omirou is the new president of the Social Democrats Movement (KISOS).

    He was elected at today's electoral party conference and beat his opponent Takis Hadjidemetriou.

    [05] Social Democrats - New President - Opponent - Statements

    Nicosia, Jul 22 (CNA) -- Yiannakis Omirou, newly-elected president of the Social Democrats Movement (KISOS), in his first comments after his election, praised the democratic process that prevailed during today's electoral conference and said the meeting offers new prospects for the party.

    Omirou was elected today KISOS president with 1,564 votes against 892 votes his opponent Takis Hadjidemetriou got. Hadjidemetriou gave his full backing to the new president and called on everybody to rally around him to help push the party forward.
