    [02] Spokesman - Greece - Turkey

    Nicosia, Jun 25 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has reiterated its backing for Greco-Turkish rapprochement and the joint effort by Athens and Ankara to agree on "low policy" issues with a view to tackle pivotal matters under better conditions.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou dismissed claims that this rapprochement shelves the question of Cyprus, noting that on the contrary the problem assumes a new momentum. CNA/MK/RM/MM/2001

    [03] Spokesman - British Bases

    Nicosia, Jun 25 (CNA) -- The government has no wish and no intention to raise the issue of the presence of British Bases on the island, its spokesman Michalis Papapetrou stressed here today, noting that public debate on the matter serves no interest for the people of Cyprus.

    The spokesman also said the government rejects the idea of conducting a referendum on whether the Bases are sovereign. CNA/جت/MM/RM/2001

    [04] Spokesman - Turkish Cypriot leader - Missing - Court

    Nicosia, Jun 25 (CNA) -- The government will examine carefully any documents relating to an application to the European Court of Human Rights the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has said he intends to file against the Republic of Cyprus in connection with Turkish Cypriot missing persons.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou, commenting on Denktash's remarks on the issue, appeared today somewhat surprised by the disclosure that the Turkish Cypriot leader, who has so far failed to recognize any Court rulings, has discovered international law and conventions on human rights.

    [05] Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies - AGM

    Nicosia, Jun 25 (CNA) -- The Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies (AMAN) is set to accept two new members, if its executive committee decides to do so, following applications for membership by Tanjug (of Yugoslavia) and STA (of Slovenia).

    At their recent Annual General Meeting (AGM), held last week in Tunis, the 17 current members, including the Cyprus News Agency, decided to examine the two applications in the next twelve months and announce their decision on the matter at their next AGM in Athens in June 2002.

    [06] Parliamentary Assembly - Council of Europe

    by Athena Arsalidou Strasbourg, Jun 25 (CNA) -- Lord Russell Johnston, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, believes that a European Court decision condemning Turkey of human rights violations in Cyprus is not likely to have much of an impact on UN-led efforts to settle the Cyprus question.

    He also considers that self-criticism in the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities is necessary before they are reconciled. CNA/AA/MM/2001

    [07] Spokesman - Justice Minister - Security measures

    Nicosia, Jun 25 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou today confirmed that Cyprus Police have taken increased security measures outside the American embassy here and other US installations, after receiving information that United States' diplomatic missions could be targeted by terrorists.

    The Spokesman said the Republic's authorities have taken precautionary measures to avoid any terrorist attack, adding that the measures will stay in place for as long as necessary. CNA/MK/RM/MM/2001

    [08] Cyprus - Egyptian delegation

    Larnaca, Jun 25 (CNA) -- A delegation headed by the First Under Secretary of the Ministry of Economy and Foreign Trade of Egypt El Said Fouad Kasem arrived here today for a five-day official visit.

    Speaking on his arrival, Kasem said the Egyptian delegation will take part in the Third Session of the Cypriot - Egyptian Joint Committee to be held on 26 June, in Nicosia. CNA/MAN/NMA/RM/MM/2000

    [09] Parliamentary Assembly - MPs - Turkey

    by Athena Arsalidou Strasbourg June 25 (CNA) -- There is no notable progress in the case Loizidou vs. Turkey, Cypriot MP Panayiotis Demetriou said here today invited to comment on the Progress Report by the Bureau of the Assembly and Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

    "I wonder whether the organs of this Institution are so indifferent on a matter of principle such as this, which has to do with the very crux of the existence of this organization, that is to say of the European Court of Human Rights' rulings" Dimitiou, who is Head of the Cyprus Parliamentary Delegation, said speaking to CNA during the ordinary Session of the PACE.
