    [01] Spokesman - Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Jun 22 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government is aware of information suggesting the United Nations are working on the resumption of the proximity talks on the Cyprus problem, government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today, noting there was nothing concrete regarding specific dates.

    Papapetrou said Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash continuous to maintain his intransigent position and expressed the government's belief that Denktash has been given enough time. KS/MK/RM/2001

    [03] Champions League - UEFA Cup - Cyprus teams

    Nicosia, Jun 22 (CNA) -- One Cyprus football team will take part in the second qualifying round for the 2001-2002 UEFA Champions League while two other Cyprus teams will take part in the qualifying round for the 2001-2002 UEFA Cup.

    According to the outcome of the draw for the qualifying round that took place today in Geneva, Cyprus Cup holder Apollon of Limassol will play for the UEFA Cup against the Albanian SK Tirana Team. Champion team Omonia of Nicosia will play for the UEFA Champions League against Crvena Zvezda of Belgrade while Cyprus Championship's runner up Olympiakos of Nicosia will play for the UEFA Cup either against Dunagerr SE or Ferencvarosi TC of Hungary.     [04] Spokesman - Exhumations - Turkish Cypriots

    Nicosia, Jun 22 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government would be "very happy" if Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash would allow the giving of data for the identification of remains of Turkish Cypriots, so this procedure could come to an end, government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    Invited to say how the government would act in case the Turkish Cypriot side does not respond positively, Papapetrou said that this would show once again that the Turkish Cypriot side blocks this procedure and thus it would "be accountable to the relatives of the Turkish Cypriots".     [05] Cyprus - National Guard - exercise

    Nicosia, June 22 (CNA) -- The annual National Guard exercise on administrative care code-named "Dimitra", begun here today and will be terminated 25 June, army chief Lieutenant-General Evangelos Florakis announced today.

    The exercise on administrative care concerns matters of personel, preservation and repairing of armed systems Florakis said and added that the exercise will concentrate on requisition "of every kind of material and means".

    [06] House President - Russian Representative

    Nicosia, Jun 22 (CNA) -- The latest developments on the Cyprus problem were discussed during a meeting held here today between House President Demetris Christophias and Russian Special Representative on Cyprus Vladimir Prygin.

    Speaking after the meeting Christophias said he and Prygin discussed the role the Parliaments of the two countries could play towards finding a viable and just solution of the Cyprus problem, while Prygin pointed out "the Parliaments of Cyprus and Russia as well as those of other countries could play a significant role in search of a just and permanent solution" to the question.     [07] Cyprus - Council of Europe Assembly

    Nicosia, June 22 (CNA) - A four-member delegation of the Cyprus Parliament will attend the third part of the 2001 Ordinary Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), which will be held in Strasbourg from 25 - 29 June.

    According to an official press release among the issues to be discussed during the Session are Turkey's obligations and commitments towards the CoE, the abolition of the death penalty in Council of Europe observer states USA and Japan and domestic slavery.

    [08] FM - Cyprus problem - UN

    Nicosia, June 22 (CNA) -- The government would be satisfied if UN Secretary General Kofi Annan called the two sides in Cyprus for the resumption of the UN-led proximity talks aiming at finding a solution to the Cyprus problem, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said here today.

    Replying to journalists' questions Kasoulides added that the resumption of the talks "could not be postponed from one year to another" adding that "there comes a time when the UN Secretary General has to decide and call for negotiations", pointing out "the side denying to take part in the negotiations must take the responsibility".
