by Maria Koniotou Gothenburg, Jun 15 (CNA) - Head of Cyprus negotiating team for accession to the European Union George Vassiliou has expressed optimism that EU member-states will reaffirm during the EU Summit beginning here today that the enlargement process is proceeding as it has been planned.

[02] Cyprus question - UN peace process

by Maria Myles Nicosia, Jun 15 (CNA) -- The UN has to walk a tightrope if it wants to see the stalled peace talks in Cyprus resume and has to see its way through a diplomatic minefield to find such means that would persuade the Turkish Cypriot leader to return to the negotiating table without alienating the Greek Cypriot side, western diplomats believe.

With a proposed draft on a overall framework solution under its arm, worked out with primarily the active help of Britain and the US but also other contributors, the UN seems to have little choice but to insist on a resumption of the process without preconditions but its Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto is not planning a visit to Cyprus at this stage.
