    [01] Cyprus Rally - Start

    Limassol, Jun 1 (CNA) -- Finland's Tomi Makkinen in a Mitsubishi opened the curtain of today's first leg of the Cyprus Rally 2001, which is included for the second time in the World Championship. Three minutes later was followed by last year's winner of the Cyprus Rally, Spaniard Carlos Sainz in a Ford.

    The Cyprus Rally which takes place between 1 - 3 June, started at 0800 local time (0500 GMT) with a total of 76 competing cars leaving the start line every three minutes, in the presence of hundreds of funs, Ministers of Communications and Works and Health, Averof Neophytou and Frixos Savvides.

    Drivers following Makkinen and Sainz are Didier Auriol in a Peugeot, Colin McRae in a Ford, Harri Rovanpera in a Peugeot, Richard Burns in a Subaru, Francois Delecour in a Ford, Freddy Loix in a Mitsubishi, Marcus Gronholm in a Peugeot and Armin Swarz in a Skoda.

    For the first time this year, five out of six world rally teams are participating with three cars instead of two.

    Today's first leg of the Rally comprises six special stages covering a total of 520.68 km. The special stages, some of which are in the Paphos district are Platres - Saittas, Foini - Koilinia, Simou - Stavros, Selladi Staktou - Panagia, Prastio - Pachna and again Foini -Koilinia.

    The first car is expected to arrive back to the start - finish area near the old port of Limassol at 19:00.

    Cyprus - Defence Ministry - OSCE members meeting

    Nicosia, Jun 1 (CNA) - A total of 44 military officers from 27 member- states of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OASCE), including Russia, the USA, Canada and 13 of the 15 European Union member states will be in Cyprus June 5 to 8 at the invitation of the Defence Ministry, to discuss confidence building measures.

    The invitation was extended within the framework of the obligation every member- state has to organise a meeting once every five years, in line with the "Vienna '99 Document". The visit includes a briefing by the National Guard here, a visit and a briefing at an army camp, as well as visits to historical sites.

    Cyprus Rally - Retirements

    Limassol, Jun 1 (CNA) -- Marcus Gronholm in a Peugeot is currently leading the Cyprus Rally 2001, which started this morning, followed by Kenneth Eriksson in a Hyundai.

    Meanwhile, Harry Rovanpera in a Peugeot retired during the second special stage in Foini - Koilinia with broken front suspension.

    [05] Cyprus - Protocol - Transfer of Sentenced Persons

    Nicosia, Jun 1 (CNA) - Cyprus today ratified the Additional Protocol to the Council of Europe (CoE) Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons, which will come into effect for Cyprus on October 1, 2001.

    A CoE press release said the Protocol sets out the rules applicable when the execution of sentences is transferred, firstly where sentenced persons have absconded from the sentencing state to their state of nationality, and secondly where they are subject to an expulsion or deportation order as a consequence of their sentence.     [06] Commerce Minister - Oil price rise

    Nicosia, Jun 1 (CNA) -- The retail price of oil and petrol went up today by 1,1 cent per litter, the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nicos Rolandis announced, saying that he would put forward proposals to the cabinet to take a final decision by the end of the month on the future price of oil and its byproducts.

    The minister refrained from disclosing anything about the proposals but indicated that he would not be averse to liberalising oil prices in the next nine to twelve months, as part of Cyprus' harmonisation process with the European Union acquis communautaire.

    [07] US Congressmen - US President - Letter

    Nicosia, Jun 1 (CNA) -- Cyprus' admission to the European Union would benefit stability in the eastern Mediterranean and facilitate serious negotiations between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides, US Congressmen have said in a letter to their President George Bush.

    They also noted that Cyprus, as an EU member, would serve US and NATO objectives.

    [08] Cyprus government - Yilmaz - US ambassador

    Nicosia, Jun 1 (CNA) – The Cyprus government will strongly protest an illegal visit by Turkish Vice President Mesut Yilmaz to the areas of the Republic occupied by Turkey since 1974, its Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today.

    Replying to questions during his daily briefing, Papapetrou also said President Glafcos Clerides and US ambassador Donald Bandler discussed efforts to reach a settlement in Cyprus at a meeting yesterday, during which the ambassador informed him he will be paying a working visit to the US.
