[01] US - Greek Foreign Ministers

Washington, May 22 (CNA) -- The question of Cyprus and the country's prospective accession to the European Union, with or without a political settlement of the protracted Cyprus problem, were part of the discussions US Secretary of State Colin Powell had with Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou at the US State Department yesterday.

According to reliable sources, Powell expressed his administration's support for the Helsinki EU decision which stipulates that a political solution in Cyprus would facilitate accession but it is not a precondition.

    UNOPS Programme Manager - Interview

    by Maria Myles

Nicosia, May 22 (CNA) -- One can hardly go wrong when two of the world's top experts are involved in the restoration project of two important religious sites on the divided island of Cyprus, Programme Manager of UNOPS (United Nations Office for Project Services) Miran Rechter believes.

He has secured the assistance of world renown Italian professor Georgio Croci, who led the team of experts working on the leaning tower of Piza, to work on the monastery of Apostolos Andreas on the most eastern tip of the Karpass peninsula, in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus and the distinguished Egyptian professor Saleh Lamei, from the University of Cairo, international expert on mosque preservation, who will oversee work at the mosque of Hala Sultan, near the southern coastal town of Larnaca.

    US - Greece - Cyprus - Turkey

Washington, May 22 (CNA) -- The European Union decision to accept Cyprus as a member, without the prior solution of the island's political problem, is the basis on which the US considers the Republic's accession course, Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou has said, after his meetings here with US Secretary of State Colin Powell and Vice President Dick Cheney.

Papandreou also said he has asked for the US contribution to the effort to bring Turkey in line with EU values and see Ankara adopt European principles that would not only help establish wider stability in the region in the Eastern Mediterranean but also facilitate changes within Turkey itself.
