[03] President Clerides - Minister of Commerce - International Fair

Nicosia, May 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus' strategic target is to create a very powerful economy, able to survive the competition in the European Union market, and to further promote Cyprus as a regional centre for the provision of services, President Glafcos Clerides said today in his address at the opening of the 26th Cyprus International Fair, noting that the local economy is characterised by dynamism, flexibility and robustness.

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nicos Rolandis referring to Cyprus' annual average growth said the island is developing by 78% faster than Europe and by 30% faster globally, pointing out that Cyprus has been listed by the World Bank as the 16th country per capita income worldwide. [04] President Clerides - Cyprus issue

Nicosia, May 17 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides expressed the hope that the international community will continue its initiative in the months ahead to find a settlement in Cyprus and warned that the current deadlock will remain, unless those states who can influence Turkey's foreign policy do so.

In his address at the opening of the 26th Cyprus International Fair President Clerides said the UN-led peace talks were frustrated because of the Turkish side's refusal to negotiate and said he cannot foresee if there is going to be a solution to the problem in the near future because that also depends on the Turkish side.
