    [01] Greek Cypriot - Occupation regime - Release

    Nicosia, May 16 (CNA) - The illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in the northern third of Cyprus today released 74-year-old Costas Dalitis, who was abducted on Sunday by Turkish troops, while riding his motorcycle on the old Nicosia- Larnaca road.

    A Police spokesman told CNA that Dalitis was transferred to the free areas of the Republic through the Ledra Palace checkpoint in Nicosia, by UN troops. CNA/MK/RG/MM/2001

    [02] Greece - EU-Cyprus Association Council

    Athens, May 16 (CNA) - Greek Government Spokesman Demetris Reppas said today that the EU-Cyprus Association Council, which convened yesterday in Brussels, gave the clear message that no-one can obstruct the EU accession course of Cyprus, which in the near future will be an EU member-state, adding that "Greece follows the right policy and will continue to do so".

    He said "Cyprus was congratulated on its performance in all sectors and because it fulfills all preconditions", noting that "the EU stands by the Helsinki decision," adding that "this is the best answer to Turkey, which thinks that it can raise obstacles." CNA/KI/RG/MM/2001

    [05] Cyprus - Russia - Talks

    Nicosia, May 16 (CNA) - Russia has reiterated its will to contribute towards the good offices mission of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus, on the basis of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, according to a Russian Foreign Ministry statement.

    Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yevgeni Gussarov met with Cyprus Foreign Ministry's Permanent Secretary Michalis Attalides yesterday in Moscow and stressed the need to resume peace talks in Cyprus soon and give the negotiations a fresh and substantive impetus. CNA/RG/MM/2001

    [06] Foreign Ministers - Cyprus - Belgium

    Brussels, May 16 (CNA) - The Cyprus problem and the island's European Union (EU) accession course were the main issues examined during a meeting between the island's Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and his Belgian counterpart, Louis Michel.

    The Belgian minister said he intends to visit Cyprus when his country takes over the EU rotating presidency in July.

    [07] Cyprus FM - UN Conference

    Nicosia, May 16 (CNA) – "Cyprus is examining ways at increasing its already existing emergency relief assistance" for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has said.

    Addressing the Third UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries in Brussels, Kasoulides also said Cyprus is actively considering an overhaul of its assistance programmes both at the institutional and the financial level. "At the same time we will continue to support national development policies by providing technical assistance", he added.
