[01] President Clerides - Press conference - Domestic policies

Nicosia, Apr 30 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides fended off criticism from the press at last night's press conference about his policies at home by presenting facts and figures from his ministries and from reports on Cyprus by international organizations, testifying that the local economy is doing fine, crime rate is very low, the standard of living has reached enviable levels, unemployment is almost non existent and people live in a free and democratic country with respect of human rights.

The President admitted however that he is not infallible and assumed full responsibility for the errors committed during his term in office, saying he would like the people of Cyprus to remember him for entering the Presidential Palace poor and leaving even poorer.

Spokesman - Turkish Cypriots - Passports

Nicosia, Apr 30 (CNA) - In the past three months there has been an increase in the number of Turkish Cypriots who apply to the Cyprus Republic to acquire Cypriot passports, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou told CNA today, invited to comment on a report carried by "Sigma" private TV station last night.

Papapetrou expressed the view this increase "may have to do with the fact that Turkish Cypriots are realising Cyprus' European Union accession course is unfolding very positively and there is a serious possibility the Republic will become a member."
