    [01] Missing Children - Council of Europe

    Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- A four-volume publication with 68,000 signatures demanding an investigation into the whereabouts of the 27 children, missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, has been handed to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Walter Schwimmer.

    Receiving Wednesday the publication from a five-member delegation of a local cultural association, Schwimmer pledged to offer every possible assistance to help end the suffering of the families concerned.

    [02] Cyprus - Peru - Credentials

    Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- Peruvian President Valentin Paniagua Corazao has expressed support to the Cyprus government's efforts for a political and diplomatic solution of the Cyprus problem.

    Receiving the credentials of Cyprus' ambassador to the country, Antonis Toumazis, Corazao said the two countries "share an interest in improving relations between them and to expand this interest in mutual benefit fields."

    [03] Cypriot jurist - Re-election - European Human Rights Court

    Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- Cypriot jurist Loucis Loucaides was yesterday re- elected judge in the European Court of Human Rights.

    Loucaides, who was re-elected in the first round of voting of the spring session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, will undertake his duties on November 1st for a six-year term.

    [04] Greek Cypriot - Turkish Cypriot "court" - "Decision"

    Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- An illegal court in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus found Greek Cypriot Panicos Tziakourmas "guilty of possessing and transporting drugs", in a case widely believed to have taken place in retaliation to the arrest and sentencing of a Turkish Cypriot drug dealer.

    The so-called court, operating in occupied Famagusta, said it would pass "sentence" at noon today, as it was reported from the occupied areas.

    [05] French Foreign Minister - Statement - Visit

    Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- France continues to back a just and lasting settlement of the Cyprus question in the UN framework consistent with Security Council resolutions, and in particular resolution 1251 of June 1999, which stipulates that a settlement must be based on a single state of Cyprus.

    The French position was outlined by a spokesperson of the French Foreign Ministry, in view of today's visit to the island by French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine.

    [06] Cyprus - Military exercises - Turkish violations

    Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- A two-day military exercise taking part within the Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR) with the participation of Greece's Air and Navy Forces ends today. Turkish military aircraft violated yesterday the Nicosia FIR.

    Defence Ministry Spokesman Andreas Giorkas told CNA that a rescue operation will take place today, as part of the exercise code-named "Toxotis- Vergina".

    Íicosia, Ápr 26 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday : 27/04/2001 to 28/04/2001

    On Friday and Saturday the weather will be fine and mainly clear. The winds will be northeasterly light to moderate and the state of sea slight to moderate.

    Maximum temperature: 27°C inland and around 24°C over coastal areas. Minimum temperature 12°C inland and around 13°C over coastal areas.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 29/04/2001 to 30/04/2001

    [08] Chinese Ambassador - Interview

    By Maria Koniotou Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- China always insists on the principle that the sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence and a non-align status of Cyprus should be fully respected and will continue to contribute to efforts for a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus issue, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Nicosia Aiguo Song said in an interview with CNA.

    Song described as "important" the relations between the countries, adding that their ties in various fields would certainly be strengthened even further in the future. In this direction the Chinese government has invited Cyprus' Finance Minister Takis Klerides to visit China for talks on issues of economic, trade and scientific cooperation. Cyprus and China established diplomatic relations on 14 September 1971.

    [09] Greek Cypriot - Turkish Cypriot "court"

    Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- Greek Cypriot Panicos Tziakourmas, who was found "guilty of possessing and transporting drugs" by an illegal Turkish Cypriot "court" in occupied Cyprus, is free to return to his family.

    The "court" passed a six-month "sentence" on Tziakourmas earlier this morning but considered he has served his "sentence." Tziakourmas is now on his way to Nicosia, escorted by UN officers, and will soon be taken to the Ledra Palace check point in Nicosia, bordering the UN- controlled buffer zone to join his family.

    [10] UNFICYP - Freed Greek Cypriot - Statement - Mother

    Nicosia, Apr 26 (CNA) -- The UN Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) has welcomed the release today of Greek Cypriot Panicos Tziakourmas by the Turkish Cypriot regime but expressed regret that he has been unable to see his dying mother, who passed away this morning.

    Tziakourmas was set free at around one o'clock today at the Ledra Palace check point, near the UN-controlled buffer zone, and in a brief statement to the press a very emotional Tziakourmas thanked everyone who has worked for his release, the government, his family and friends and other people.
