    [01] Association of Commonwealth Universities - Conference

    Nicosia Apr 23 (CNA)-- The Conference of Executive Heads of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) opened today in Nicosia with the participation of more than 280 executive heads from 35 countries.

    The four-day conference will deal with the subject "New configurations in Globalisation. Forging links between the universities of the Commonwealth, the EU and other regional groupings".

    [08] Cyprus - Desalination unit - Inauguration

    Larnaca, Apr 23 (CNA) -- President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides today inaugurated the second desalination plant here, built in the eastern coastal town of Laraca, to tackle water scarcity, noting that "a new era has began for Cyprus".

    Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel Shimon Peres, who attended the ceremony, said "this is a call for peace" and pointed to "the potential of technology", while on his part Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Costas Themistocleous assured that the water supplied from dams, desalination plants and all Government Water Works is completely safe.

    [04] Cyprus - Ireland - Justice Ministers

    Nicosia, Apr, 23 (CNA) -- The possibility of Cyprus and Ireland signing a bilateral agreement for combating money laundering and drug trafficking as well as Cyprus' accession to the European Union were discussed in depth today during a meeting between Ireland's Minister of Justice John O' Donnoghue and Cyprus' chief negotiator in the accession talks with the Union George Vassiliou.

    O' Donnoghue later met with Minister of Justice and Public Order Nicos Koshis who invited his Irish counterpart to visit the island officially and said that Ireland "unreservedly supports Cyprus' accession course with no conditions".

    [05] Israeli Foreign Minister - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Apr 23 (CNA) -- Israel's Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres stated here today that his country supports the union of Cyprus and does not recognise the illegal regime set up in the Republic's northern territory occupied by Turkish troops since 1974.

    Speaking to local journalists this afternoon, Peres, who leaves tonight after a two-day official visit at the invitation of his Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kasoulides, said the solution to the Cyprus problem "will come with the Europising of the parties involved."

    [06] Cyprus - Foreign Minister - Commonwealth Secretary General

    Nicosia, Apr, 23 (CNA) -- The Commonwealth supports the UN-led proximity talks aimed at finding a solution to the Cyprus question, its Secretary General Donald McKinnon said here today, adding that "we want to see a good solution that is sustainable" and assuring that the Commonwealth will continue to stand by the people and government of Cyprus "to ensure that this can be achieved".

    Speaking after a meeting with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, who noted the "importance Cyprus attaches to its membership to the Commonwealth", McKinnon said the Commonwealth is "fully engaged" in the UN- led peace process adding that one of its Deputy Secretary Generals "attends the proximity talks as an observer".
