    [01] Britain - Cyprus - Vaz - Letter

Nicosia, Apr 1 (CNA) - British Minister of State Keith Vaz has said that during his recent visit to Cyprus he reiterated the UK's strong support to a settlement on the island and welcomed progress the Republic is making towards European Union accession.

In a reply letter to Hendon Councillor Andreas Tambourides, Vaz says that during his stay he also attended a bicommunal event and reiterates London's support to maintaining contacts between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

[02] President Clerides - Liberation struggle commemorations

Nicosia, Apr 1 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides today reiterated the will to continue the struggle to rid Cyprus from the Turkish forces occupying 37 percent of the island's territory since 1974, underlining that "this is our obligation".

"We have a difficult struggle ahead of us but we will carry it out decisively," the President said after a church service at Saint John's Cathedral, in Nicosia commemorating the anniversary of the four-year struggle against British colonial rule and for union with Greece, that finally led to independence and the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960.

[03] President Clerides - US - Cyprus question

Nicosia, Apr 1 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides considers the meeting the Cyprus Foreign Minister will have with his American counterpart in a few days as an indication of US interest in a settlement being reached in Cyprus soon.

Invited to comment on the fact that Ioannis Kasoulides will be meeting Colin Powell so soon after the US Foreign Secretary took up office, the President said the government will assess the US position towards Cyprus after the meeting, to be held on April 9 in Washington.

[04] European Parliament - Greek EMP - Tziakourmas

Nicosia, Apr 1, (CNA) -- A motion for a resolution calling for the immediate release of Greek Cypriot Panicos Tziakourmas, who was abducted and illegally detained by the Turkish occupation troops in Cyprus since last December, has been tabled by Greek EMP George Katiforis, Vice President of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, and is expected to be approved in the coming week.

The motion demands that "Turkey and its subordinate local administration in the occupied area of Cyprus release Tziakourmas immediately and without preconditions" and calls on Ankara "to withdraw its occupying forces and to comply with the UN resolutions on Cyprus".
