[03] Greek Foreign Minister - Arrival

Larnaca, Mar 11 (CNA) -- A solution to the Cyprus problem would bring not only stability in the Eastern Mediterranean but also a new security system which would contribute substantially to the promotion of regional peace and cooperation, Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou stressed here today.

Noting that a solution, prior to Cyprus' accession to the European Union, is preferable, he pointed out that Cyprus should not be held hostage to the situation on the island, if there is no settlement and called on the Turkish Cypriots to seize the opportunity and become part of the EU accession process.

Papandreou, who is accompanied on his visit here by Greek Olympic Games medalists, expressed the hope that Cyprus will be represented in the 2004 Games by a unified team, comprising Greek and Turkish Cypriot athletes. The minister reassured that the new US administration has a keen interest in Cyprus, just as the previous administration had.
