    [03] Spokesman - Holbrooke - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) - The government has welcomed statements by former US permanent representative to the UN Richard Holbrooke that the main obstacle in efforts to make headway towards a Cyprus settlement rests with the leadership of the Turkish Cypriots.

    "This is a very positive statement and reflects the facts," Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today, invited to comment on Holbrooke's remark that he deeply regrets that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has continued to refuse to make progress on the solution of the Cyprus problem.     [04] Spokesman - US narcotics report

    Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) - Cyprus has enacted very stringent legislation to combat money laundering and it is not fair to level uncorroborated charges against the Republic, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today, commenting on a US State Department report on narcotics in Cyprus.

    The Spokesman said the report indicates that the continuing occupation of part of Cyprus is, among other factors, a problem which hampers the fight against drugs. CNA/MM/RG/2001

    [05] Cyprus - Foot and mouth disease - Measures

    Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) - Cyprus has put into effect all necessary measures to prevent any outbreak of the foot and mouth disease and is cooperating with the authorities of the British Bases on the island and the UN associations, dealing with the Republic's northern Turkish occupied areas, deputy Director of Veterinary Department Andreas Orphanides told CNA today.

    He said any passengers arriving from UK flights are obliged to step onto a chemically treated mat and are told to hand over to the Cypriot authorities any animal food they may be carrying with them. CNA/MM/RG/2001

    [06] Cyprus Shipping Council - AGM

    Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) - The Cyprus Shipping Council will continue to back government efforts to harmonise its institutions and legislation in the shipping industry, Council president Captain Juergen Hahn has told the Annual General Meeting (AGM), calling on the government to meet in good time all the requirements under the STCW 95 convention, relating to the certification and training of seafarers.

    Communications and Works Minister Averof Neofytou said the government is determined to enhance the image of the Cyprus flag, reassuring the shipping industry that it is doing all it can to ensure that Cyprus remains an important international shipping centre even after accession.     [07] Cyprus - European cooperation

    Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) - Cyprus has signed the Memorandums of Mutual Understanding relating to the fight against breast cancer and initiatives in the agricultural sector.

    The Republic's Permanent Representative to the European Union Ambassador Theofilos Theofilou signed the relevant documents Thursday as part of the European Cooperation in Scientific and Technical Research field (COST). CNA/MM/RG/2001

    [08] Cyprus - International Convention - Terrorism

    Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) - Cyprus is the 39th country to have signed the international Convention to Combat the Financing of Terrorism, an official announcement said here today.

    The Convention was signed on behalf of President Glafcos Clerides by the Republic's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Sotos Zakhaeos. CNA/MM/RG/2001

    [09] Belarus Ìinister - Visit

    Nicosia, Mar 2 (CNA) - Belarus Minister of Transport and Communications Alyaksandr Lukashou arrives here Saturday on a four-day visit during which Belarus and Cyprus will sign a cooperation agreement in international road transport.

    Lukashou will be in Cyprus at the invitation of his Cypriot counterpart Minister of Communications and Works Averof Neophytou.
