[01] ÏSCE - Cyprus Parliamentary elections

Nicosia, Mar 1 (CNA) - The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) will for the first time observe elections in Cyprus. Two officers at the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) will be coming here mid-March for a preparatory visit in view of the May 27 parliamentary elections.

Informed sources told CNA the decision was taken by the OSCE but it should not raise concerns regarding the election process in Cyprus, as this is normal practice and the ODIHR has observed elections in European Union countries such as Finland, Spain and Holland.

[02] Spokesman - Turkish Cypriots - Economic crisis

Nicosia, Mar 1 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said that for the first time Turkish Cypriots are beginning to air the view that a settlement of the Cyprus question could contribute towards the resolution of economic and social problems they are facing in the Turkish occupied part of the island.

"Pressure from Turkish Cypriots against the policies of the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Rauf Dentkash and his associates is a factor that, in conjunction with other elements, could prove useful in the future towards efforts to achieve a settlement," Papapetrou said at his daily briefing.
