[01] President Clerides - Cyprus problem

Nicosia, Feb 4 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides has said that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash did not want a solution to the Cyprus problem, if it did not include the element of recognition for his self- styled regime in the north and a form of confederation on the island.

In an interview with daily "Simerini" newspaper, on the occasion of its 25th anniversary, President Clerides also said the new administration in the United States may not continue to maintain presidential envoys to help solve the Cyprus problem and that they would give priority to helping regions, which are under the immediate threat of unrest. [05] Cyprus - 7th Regional UN Cartographic Conference

Nicosia, Feb 4 (CNA) - The Republic of Cyprus, in its report to the 7th UN Regional Cartographic Conference for the Americas, requests from all interested parties dealing with cartography and the standardisation of geographical names in Cyprus to use only the official geographical names, which are recognised by the United Nations, stressing that Turkish policy to rename toponyms on the island "constitutes an attempt to eradicate the historical, cultural and national heritage of the occupied area".

The report, presented to the Conference by President of the Cyprus Permanent Committee for the Standardisation of Geographical Names Prodromos Vassiliou, notes that Turkey, "through its subordinate local administration in the occupied northern part of the island, proceeds systematically to change and rename in an arbitrary way, all the internationally accepted official toponyms, that have survived through centuries, in the area of northern Cyprus that it illegally occupies since 1974".
