    [01] Foreign Ministers - Cyprus - Spain

Nicosia, Jan 24 (CNA) -- Spain's Foreign Minister Josep Pique has expressed his country's support to efforts for a settlement to the Cyprus problem, noting it was created by the invasion of Turkish forces. He called on the Turkish Cypriot leader to return to the proximity talks so that a solution based on UN Security Council resolutions is reached.

Speaking at a press conference after talks with his Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kasoulides in Madrid yesterday, Pique also referred to Cyprus' efforts to join the European Union saying it would be a "logical goal" to expect the Republic's accession negotiations to be completed in the first six months of 2002, when Spain will be holding the rotating presidency.

Stricken tanker - Salvage operation - Cyprus

Nicosia, Jan 24 (CNA) - About 6.000 tonnes of gasoline, out of a total of 29.500, have been pumped out of the Cyprus registered "Castor" tanker, which is currently anchored 55 miles off Spain, after it developed a 20- metre crack in its deck during a storm, while sailing from Ukraine to Lagos, Nigeria, three weeks ago.

Senior Inspector of the Cyprus Merchant Shipping Department, Andreas Constantinou, told CNA that the risk of a fire breaking out on the ship had elapsed and that "not a drop" of gasoline had spilled into the sea. CNA/ITS/RG/GP/2001
