    [01] Defence Minister - Depleted uranium - Training

    Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) -- Officers serving with the Cyprus army will go to Greece to be trained on issues relating to depleted uranium and ways of tackling possible dangers, Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos has announced.

    Speaking to reporters on his return from Athens last night, regarding information that there may be weapons with depleted uranium in the Turkish- occupied areas of the island, Hasikos assured that the National Guard will take all necessary measures to prevent and handle possible dangers.

    [02] Britain - Turkey - Loizidou case

    London, Jan 17 (CNA) -- The British government will continue to play its part in the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministerw with regard to the implementation by Turkey of a European Court ruling in the case of a Greek Cypriot, pending for over two years.

    Replying to a question yesterday by Labour MP Tom Cox, in the House of Commons, on the Titina Loizidou case, British Minister for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Keith Vaz said the UK government will continue to play its part in the Committee, which is responsible for supervising the implementation of judgments and for taking the necessary measures to ensure that they are implemented.

    [03] EU Enlargement Commissioner - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) -- European Union Commissioner responsible for Enlargement Gunter Verheugen has ruled out the possibility of the illegal regime in the northern areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey since 1974 holding separate accession negotiations and said it would be "absolutely illusory" on its part to think it may join the EU as part of Turkey.

    Speaking at a press conference in Brussels Tuesday on the enlargement process after the Nice summit, Verheugen expressed concern with the hardening of the position of the Turkish side in the UN-led Cyprus peace effort and appealed to all concerned to work towards a solution on the island.

    [04] CATO Institute - Vice President - Interview

    by Maria Myles Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) -- The US has to change its policy towards Turkey if existing problems between that country and many of its neighbours are to be moved towards their resolution and if radical changes for the better are to take place within the country itself, Ted Carpenter, Vice President for Defence and Foreign Policy Studies at the American public policy research foundation "The CATO Institute", believes.

    He maintains that the new US administration "is likely to be the most pro- Turkiss since the mid 1970s, in the mistaken belief that Turkey is an indispensable and trustworthy ally in the region." He considers that it will be another five years or so before Ankara takes those crucial decisions that would pave the way for a settlement of the Cyprus issue.

    [05] Greek Cypriot - Occupation regime

    Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) -- The self-styled regime in the Turkish- occupied areas of Cyprus has set for January 30th an illegal "hearing" for the temporary "release on bail" of Greek Cypriot Panicos Tziakourmas, who was abducted last month and is being illegally held in the occupied territory.

    Charles Gaulkin, acting Spokesman for the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), told CNA today that the Turkish Cypriot lawyer representing Tziakourmas appeared before the "court", but "all they did was to set the date". CNA/MA/GP/2001

    [06] Famagusta Committee - Turkish threats

    Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) -- The Coordinating Committee of the Turkish- occupied town of Famagusta has called on the international community to take concerted action and use its influence so that the Turkish side does not go ahead with its threats to illegally settle the area of Varosha, the fenced-off town centre.

    The Committee today handed a letter to representatives of the embassies of the US, Russia, France, Great Britain and the EU demanding the return of all Greek Cypriot refugees to their homes, the implementation of UN resolutions, the withdrawal of the Turkish occupation forces and settlers and a just and viable solution in Cyprus.

    [07] Bank employees - Work stoppage

    Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) -- As bank employees staged a two-hour warning work stoppage today, their trade union General Secretary Loizos Hadjicostis warned about bank strike if a government-backed National Health Service bill gets the approval of the House of Representatives.

    "Bank employees will wait to see the reaction of the legislative and if the bill gets through, our trade union (ETIK) will proceed with more action," he told CNA today, when bank employees stopped work from 1030 to 1230 local time (0830-1030 GMT).

    [08] Cyprus - Council of Europe Conventions - Ratification

    Nicosia, Jan 17 (CNA) - Cyprus has ratified the European Convention on Compensation of Victims of Violent Crimes and the Criminal Law Convention on Corruption, of the Council of Europe.

    The instruments of ratification were handed today by Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe Christophoros Yiangou to the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe Walter Schwimmer. CNA/RG/GP/2001
