[01] Senior EU official - Cyprus - Accession course

By Maria Myles Nicosia, Dec 17 (CNA) -- A senior European Union official believes that Cyprus' EU accession course will increasingly reinforce UN efforts to settle the political question and next year will be critical in this regard.

"We expect to see a strong positive effect of the EU accession negotiations on the UN process," Michael Leigh, Director at the Directorate for enlargement of the EU Commission, who has just completed a visit to the island and is set to return for more discussions in the future, has told Cypriot journalists.

[02] Famagusta Mayor - Bush election - Congratulations

Nicosia, Dec 17 (CNA) - Mayor of the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta Andreas Pougiouros has sent a congratulatory telegram to US President elect George Bush expressing the sincere hope he will intensify efforts for a "speedy and just solution in Cyprus with residents of the island enjoying equal freedom and human rights."

He also recalls a meeting he had when he was Cyprus' permanent representative to the UN with Bush's father, when he was Vice-President of the USA, and says he remembers "his very kind words and his promise to help our country and people."
