[02] European Parliament - EU candidate countries - Meeting

Limassol, Nov 27 (CNA) - Membership talks between the European Union and candidate countries must intensify and should not divert from the defined objective criteria already set out, House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou has said in his address to the 10th meeting of the President of the European Parliament with the presidents of the parliaments of the countries participating in the enlargement process.

He said next month's EU summit in Nice is expected to take historic decisions on institutional change within the Union and added that a successful outcome of the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) would give a new dimension to the enlargement process. CNA/MM/RG/2000

[04] Britain - UN peace process

London, Nov 27 (CNA) - Britain has urged the parties in the Cyprus peace effort to engage constructively in the UN process, reiterating its support for the UN Secretary-General's effort to find a comprehensive settlement.

The comments from a spokeswoman of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office come in the wake of public statements by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash that the proximity talks so far have been a waste of time and that he sees no reason he should attend unless and until his breakaway regime in Turkish occupied Cyprus is recognised.
