    [01] Limassol Bishop cleared of allegations

    Nicosia, Nov 17 (CNA) -- The Major Synod last night unanimously cleared Limassol Bishop Athanasios of homosexuality allegations after three days of meetings in Nicosia during which it heard all available information, including testimonies from clergy and laymen involved.

    Primate of the Church of Cyprus Archbishop Chrysostomos had called a Major Synod, comprising high-ranking Orthodox church leaders from Greece and the apostolic seats of Jerusalem, Alexandria and Antioch, to put an end to a church crisis rocking Cyprus for the past few months.

    [02] President Clerides - Swedish Foreign Minister

    Nicosia, Nov 17 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides received here today Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh, who arrived in Cyprus last night.

    After the Presidential Palace meeting Lindh crossed into the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkish troops to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    [03] British minister - Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Nov 17 (CNA) -- British Minister responsible for Europe Keith Vaz believes progress has been made in the UN-led proximity talks to reach a settlement in Cyprus, noting that this process has now lasted more than any previous attempt and the parties have shown a commitment.

    In a letter to British MP Ann Cryer, conveyed to the Mayor of the Turkish- occupied town of Famagusta Andreas Pouyouros, the British official says his country "will continue to urge all those involved in the search for a settlement in Cyprus to engage in the UN process constructively and flexibly."

    Iranian Foreign Policy - Cyprus

    Nicosia, Nov 17 (CNA) -- "Cyprus , as a friendly country, can play a decisive role to enforce peace, security and development in the region," said here Dr Hamidreza Assefi, Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman and Director General of Mass Media Affairs.

    In a speech at the Cyprus University last night on the "Foreign Policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Approaches, Challenges and Achievements", Dr Assefi said Iran, "as one of the most ancient and stable countries of the region seeks for expansion and deepening of regional cooperation for peace, security and development. To this end, we sincerely shake hands with our friends."

    [05] President Clerides - Former UN Representative - US Embassy

    Nicosia, Nov 17 (CNA) -- Former UN Special Representative in Cyprus Gustave Feissel has described as very useful a project by the US Embassy in Nicosia aimed at promoting relations and tolerance between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.

    Feissel, who was received today by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, told the press he came to Cyprus because he had been asked by the US Embassy "to be helpful in the project to promote greater tolerance between the two communities", adding he took advantage "to pay a courtesy call" to President Clerides.

    [06] Finance Minister - Indonesia - Singapore

    Larnaca, Nov 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Finance Minister Takis Klerides left today for Indonesia to hold a second round of talks between the two countries aimed at reaching an agreement for the avoidance of double taxation, and he will afterwards visit Singapore to sign a similar agreement with that country.

    During his visit to Indonesia, Klerides will have talks with his Indonesian counterpart, while in Singapore he will sign the double taxation agreement with the country's Finance Minister Richard Hu.

    [07] Cyprus - Sweden - Foreign Ministers

    Nicosia, Nov 17 (CNA) - Swedish Foreign Minister, Anna Lindh, told a joint press conference with her Cypriot counterpart, Ioannis Kasoulides, in Nicosia today that she had conveyed the message to both sides on the island that they must be constructive in the context of UN-led proximity talks on the Cyprus problem, and reiterated that the European Union has decided not to set a settlement as a precondition for the island's accession.

    Lindh, whose country will be presiding over the European Union for the first half of the year 2001, said that her country would keep the 15- nation's bloc enlargement as a top priority.
