    [01] US President - Cyprus question - Bimonthly report

    Washington, Nov 7 (CNA) - "The United States has remained steadfast in its efforts to bring about a negotiated Cyprus settlement based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation", US President Bill Clinton notes in a report on progress toward a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus question, covering the period August 1 - September 30, 2000, to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

    Clinton adds that he conveyed the views of the American government "to Turkish President Ahmed Sezer during a meeting at the United States Millennium Summit, emphasising the importance of a just and lasting solution for all Cypriots". CNA/DA/RM/RG/2000

    [02] UN Spokesman - Cyprus talks

    by Maria Myles Geneva, Nov 7 (CNA) - UN Deputy Spokesman in Geneva, Jamel ben Yahmed, announced today that UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, would be actively involved in the proximity talks on the Cyprus problem as of tomorrow.

    Briefing the press in Geneva, Yahmed said the UN chief's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, "continues the proximity talks" with meetings with both leaders, adding that "in the same context, I remind you that the Secretary- General arrives here tomorrow morning". CNA/MM/RG/GP/2000

    [03] President Clerides - UN Special Adviser - Meeting

    by Maria Myles Geneva, Nov 7 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides met today in Geneva UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, in the context of proximity talks on the Cyprus problem.

    Speaking after the hour-long meeting, President Clerides said "we continued the discussion on issues of powers and competences". CNA/MM/RG/GP/2000

    [04] Cyprus National Guard - European joint exercise

    Nicosia, Nov 7 (CNA) -- Cypriot military officers will take part for the first time in an European joint exercise held within the framework of the "Partnership for Peace".

    Four National Guard officers were due to leave today for Austria, where the exercise will take place on November 9 and 10 in a mountainous region and under conditions of real war.

    [06] Swedish Foreign Minister - Cyprus - Visit

    Nicosia, Nov 7 (CNA) - Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anna Lindh, arrives in Cyprus on November 16, for a two-day official visit.

    During her stay, Lindh will be received by President Glafcos Clerides and will meet with her Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kasoulides for official talks. CNA/RG/GP/2000

    [07] Famagusta Council - Turkish exercise

    Nicosia, Nov 7 (CNA) -- The municipal council of the Turkish-occupied town of Famagusta has called on the UN and foreign governments to take immediate measures in order to end the Turkish occupation of part of Cyprus and to stop holding illegal and provocative military exercises on the island.

    In an announcement Famagusta Mayor Andreas Pouyouros expresses his strong opposition to the Turkish Naval Forces' intention to anchor four frigates, two submarines and one fuel-oil supply ship in the closed port of Famagusta during the Turkish military manoeuvres code-named "Barbaros 2000", held November 3 to 16.
