    [01] President Clerides - UN Special Adviser

    Nicosia, Oct 27 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides and the UN Secretary- General's Special Adviser for Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, had a "general and free exchange of views" on ways of approaching the Cyprus problem and ways of overcoming difficulties blocking the road to a solution.

    Speaking after the two-hour long meeting, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said President Clerides stressed once again to the UN official that "the basis and the framework for a solution exists, and that is the UN Security Council resolutions". CNA/MCH/RG/2000

    [04] Cyprus - Motorshow 2000 - Press Conference

    Nicosia, Oct 27 (CNA) - Thirty exhibitors will take part in this year's Motorshow to be held in Nicosia between 8 and 12 November, Chairman of the Cyprus State Fairs Authority Iacovos Demetriou said today.

    Speaking at a press conference, Demetriou said that the exhibitors include 18 motor vehicle importers, who will be presenting the latest achievements of the world car industry. CNA/RM/RG/2000

    [05] Commonwealth Senior Officials - Meeting - Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Oct 27 (CNA) - The 15th Meeting of Commonwealth Senior Officials, which was held in Samoa, adopted in its conclusions a paragraph on Cyprus, which reads that "the Meeting reaffirmed support for the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Cyprus" and "called for the implementation of UN resolutions on Cyprus".

    The meeting "expressed the hope that the on-going proximity talks conducted under the United Nations Secretary-General's auspices would lead to a just and lasting settlement in conformity with the United Nations Security Council Resolutions calling for a bizonal and bicommunal federal Republic of Cyprus, with a single sovereignty and international personality and a single citizenship comprising two politically equal communities as defined in the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions".     [06] UN envoy - Press Conference

    Nicosia, Oct 27 (CNA) - The top UN envoy dealing with the Cyprus question has called on the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to work in a constructive way with him by putting forward their comments on ideas the UN provides for them in order to help "write the script for peace and reconciliation for all Cypriots."

    UN Secretary General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto told a press conference here today, after his week-long contacts on the island, that the UN is working within certain guidelines contained in Security Council resolution 1250 to reach a comprehensive settlement with a legally binding text and a calendar that would cover all issues pertaining to the problem.

    [07] Finance Ministers - Cyprus - Greece - Memorandum

    Nicosia, Oct 27 (CNA) - A memorandum of economic cooperation between Cyprus and Greece was signed today by Cyprus' Finance Minister Takis Klirides and his Greek counterpart Yiannos Papantoniou, who is currently visiting the island.

    Speaking after the ceremony, Papantoniou said the memorandum constitutes "another important step towards the promotion and reinforcement of the economic cooperation between the two countries" and referred to the activities of Cypriot and Greek businesses in the two countries and the mutual cooperation and activities in third countries.     [08] Commerce Minister - Energy policy

    Nicosia, Oct 27 (CNA) - The Cyprus Council of Ministers has approved the grant of 50.000 fluorescent bulbs to municipalities and communities as one of the measures taken by the government in order to save energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Nicos Rolandis said today, adding that such bulbs would be given at lower prices or free to households that indicate a reduction in consumption on their electricity bills.

    Rolandis also announced the setting up of a ministerial committee, comprising himself and the Communications and Works Minister, to examine the work of a technical committee for the implementation of measures to save energy. CNA/ITS/RM/RG/2000
