    Nicosia, Oct 10 (CNA) - The government continues to regard the opening statement by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan at the September peace talks as "unfair treatment" towards the Greek Cypriot side and will make additional efforts to rectify the situation.

    Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said the Greek Cypriot side would have been in a worse situation had it left the negotiating table because of the statement.

    European Enlargement Commissioner - Cyprus

    Brussels, Oct 10 (CNA) -- European Union Enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen has said the 15-member block wants to facilitate the UN-led Cyprus peace process through the accession negotiations it has opened with the Republic and expressed the view the European integration process will facilitate a settlement on the island.

    Speaking to CNA in Brussels, Verheugen would not reveal whether the Cyprus question will be mentioned in the document prepared by the EU for Turkey's accession partnership and said the French EU rotating presidency does not intend to set target dates for the conclusion of the accession talks.

    Spokesman - EU - Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Oct 10 (CNA) - The government has welcomed statements by European Union officials on Cyprus, saying they convey a clear message to the Turkish Cypriot side.

    The government has also welcomed the intention of EU enlargement Commissioner Gunter Verheugen to be present in the wings of the UN-led peace talks, due to resume in Geneva early November.

    Cyprus - Greece - Cooperation Memorandum

    Nicosia, Oct 10 (CNA)- Cyprus and Greece signed here today a three-year memorandum of cultural cooperation to boost ties, which provides for proposals to be submitted to the competent authorities for the Athens 2004 Olympiad.

    Cyprus Education and Culture Minister Ouranios Ioannides said a special team will be set up to deal with the proposals, which refer to the route of the Olympic flame and the making of the bronze medals at the Games with copper from Cyprus.

    Nicosia, Oct 10 (CNA) - The General Secretary of the Turkish Cypriot Movement for Patriotic Unity Izzet Ican, who met here today Greek Cypriot party leaders, has stressed the urgent need for all Cypriots to work together for a common homeland under a federal roof on the basis of UN resolutions.

    He also gave his full backing to efforts to bring the two communities closer together and continue common projects and programmes for rapprochement.

    Cyprus - EU parliamentary committee

    Brussels, Oct 10 (CNA) - Cypriot and European Parliamentarians rounded up their two day meeting on Cyprus' accession process with a joint statement outlining views and positions set out by EU and other officials at the biannual meeting.

    The members of the Cyprus - EU Joint Parliamentary Committee decided to meet again in March next year, in Cyprus.

    Commerce Minister - EXPO 2000

    Nicosia, Oct 10 (CNA) -- Germany has been for many years one of our biggest trading partners, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Nicos Rolandis has said, adding that "in 1999 our exports to Germany reached 77 million DM while our imports from Germany amounted to 460 million DM. "

    In his speech at the official ceremony marking Cyprus day at the World Exposition 2000 (EXPO 2000), in Hanover, Rolandis said every year about 250, 000 Germans visit the island and the German business community has taken advantage of Cyprus as an international business and services centre.

    European Parliament – Turkey - Cyprus

    Brussels, Oct 10 (CNA) – A draft resolution, adopted today by the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament, calls on Turkey to withdraw its occupation forces from Cyprus and act in line with UN decisions to find a just, viable and comprehensive settlement.

    The draft resolution deplores the violation of the status quo on the island by the Turkish occupation troops and considers that the European Union cannot open accession negotiations with Turkey until it fulfills the Copenhagen criteria on economic and human rights issues.
