    [02] Russian Foreign Ministry - Cyprus peace effort

    Nicosia, Sep 25 (CNA) -- Russia underlined its support to a settlement in Cyprus based on UN resolutions and two agreements reached between the two communities in Cyprus in the 1970s, during a meeting a Foreign Ministry official held in New York on the sidelines of the UN-led talks for a settlement, that are wrapping up tomorrow.

    A statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry on the meetings Director of European Cooperation Vladimir Tchizhov had in the US with key players in the Cyprus problem, reiterates Moscow's readiness, as a UN Security Council member, to continue its active role in the Cyprus question.

    [03] Interior and Justice Ministers - Illegal immigrants

    Nicosia, Sep 25 (CNA) -- The Cyprus authorities have collected additional evidence confirming that a boat carrying more than 260 illegal immigrants, which sank off the shores of the island on September 13, had sailed off from Lebanon.

    The new information, including a testimony from the boat's captain and photographs proving it sailed from Lebanon, was handed over to the Lebanese Charge d'Affaires in Nicosia by Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary Michalis Attalides.

    [05] CoE - Turkey - Loizidou case

    By Nikos Markides Strasbourg, Sep 25 (CNA) -- President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (CoE) Lord Russell Johnston, said here today the responsibility of implementing a decision by the European Court of Human Rights regarding the case of a Greek Cypriot woman against Turkey lies with the Committee of Ministers.

    During a press conference shortly before the opening of the fourth part of the Ordinary Session of the CoE Parliamentary Assembly, Lord Russell said they have very consistently "been pressing for the Committee of Ministers to enter into a dialogue with the Turks and to perhaps set a time scale for some implementation," stressing at the same time that "the decision finally is with them".

    [06] EU - Military Force - Candidate countries

    Brussels, Sep 25 (CNA) -- Military officials from the 13 candidate countries for accession to the European Union were briefed today in Brussels on the Union's decision to create a military force by 2003.

    Among the participants were Greek Cypriot and Turkish officers who found themselves at the same table for the first time since 1963, when intercommunal strife led to the withdrawal of the Turkish Cypriots from the government.

    [07] President Clerides - Cyprus peace talks

    By Maria Myles New York, Sep 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides has said he replies to floating ideas the UN puts forward at the ongoing proximity talks, which conclude here Tuesday, stressing that he defends the positions of the Greek Cypriot side on the basis of UN resolutions.

    The President also said there is no backtracking on the positions of the Greek Cypriot side and explained that some problematic issues were under discussion in the past and were rightly rejected by previous governments of the Republic as well.

    [08] UN - Cyprus peace talks

    by Maria Myles New York, Sep 25 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's Spokesman Fred Eckhard announced here that the next round of UN-led proximity talks will take place in Geneva, but no date has been set.

    The announcement was made at today's daily press briefing as the fourth round of proximity talks is coming to an end.
