CNA MA/GP/20001135:CYPPRESS:05[05] UNFICYP - World Clean Up DayNicosia, Sep 22 (CNA) -- Members of the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) are today cleaning up garbage throughout the 180-kilometre long buffer zone created on the island after the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of 37 percent of the Republic's territory, joining in with groups and individuals around the globe taking part in World Clean Up Day."The aim is to contribute to a worldwide conservation initiative and to help improve the environment in and around the buffer zone," an UNFICYP press release says, noting that some of the rubbish gets blown into the buffer zone while some is dumped there and "the result is ugly, unhealthy and a threat to the area's wildlife."
