    Lebanese delegation - Visit - Illegal immigrants

    Nicosia, Sep 18 (CNA) -- A two-member delegation of the Lebanese Ministry of Emigrant Affairs is arriving in Nicosia tomorrow in relation to the issue that came up after differences between the two countries as to whether or not 266 illegal immigrants rescued after their boat sank off Cyprus' western coast last week came from Lebanon.

    Speaking to CNA Cyprus Interior Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou said the two high-ranking officials will be having talks on the issue with the relevant local authorities.

    Cyprus - Statistics - Tourism - Increase

    Nicosia, Sep 18 (CNA) -- Visitors arriving in Cyprus increased by 9,4 percent in 1999 compared to 1998.

    According to the 1999 annual report "Tourism Migration and Travel Statistics" released today, total arrivals of travelers (including excursionists) reached 3.142.293 recording an increase of 9,4 percent, while departures totalled 3.145.956, repersenting an increase of 9,6 percent compared to 1998.

    [05] President Clerides - Greek government - Cyprus proximity talks

    New York, Sep 18 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides described a meeting he had here today with the UN Secretary-General's special adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto as "very good", but refrained from disclosing its content abiding by a news blackout on issues relating to the proximity talks requested by the UN.

    Speaking to reporters after the 70-minute meeting at UN headquarters in New York, President Clerides said "an exchange of views took place" and left for his hotel, where he will brief the members of the National Council, the top advisory body to the president on the Cyprus question comprising parliamentary party leaders, on his talks with de Soto.

    [06] UN spokesman - Cyprus proximity talks

    New York, Sep 18 (CNA) -- The UN Secretary-General's spokesman Fred Eckhard told his daily briefing that the Cyprus proximity talks, that opened in New York on September 12, are continuing today and are expected to carry on throughout this week.

    Eckhard refrained from answering a CNA question when UN Secretary- General Kofi Annan will reply in writing to two letters sent to him by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, because of a UN blackout on statements regarding the substance of the talks.
