    [03] Illegal immigrants - Interior Minister - Lebanese Charge d' Affaires

    Nicosia, Sep 15 (CNA) - Interior Minister, Christodoulos Christodoulou, said today that a boat carrying 266 illegal immigrants, mainly Iranians and Kurds, who were saved from drowning on September 13 when their boat sank off the shores of western Cyprus, had sailed from Lebanon for either Crete or Italy.

    Christodoulou said that the authorities knew on September 12 that the specific boat had set sail from Lebanon and that the Italian and Greek authorities had been notified.

    [04] National Council - Cyprus talks

    by Maria Myles New York, Sep 15 (CNA) - Government Spokesman, Michalis Papapetrou, has said that President Glafcos Clerides will meet today with the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, in the context of UN-led proximity talks on the Cyprus problem.

    Speaking after a meeting of the National Council, advisory body to the President on the Cyprus problem comprising parliamentary party leaders and representatives, Papapetrou said a diplomatic battle had taken place over the past couple of days and that the Greek Cypriot side had "won".

    [05] Cyprus and EU negotiators - Press conference

    Nicosia, Sep 15 (CNA) - The 12-member European Union (EU) mission, under the EU's chief negotiator for Cyprus Leopold Maurer, determined during its contacts in Cyprus that the island is on the right track for harmonisation with the acquis communautaire.

    Speaking during a press conference, Maurer and Cyprus' chief negotiator George Vassiliou both said that a series of matters had been clarified, so that more chapters of the acquis communautaire could be wrapped up, noting that there was still quite a lot of work to be done.

    [06] President Clerides - Return to talks

    by Maria Myles New York, Sep 15 (CNA) --- References in a statement by the UN Secretary General on the Cyprus peace talks, which were opened to different interpretations, have been fully clarified to President Glafcos Clerides, who returns today to the UN- led proximity talks today after a two-day absence.

    The President, having received assurances that negotiations are taking place in the framework of the UN Security Council resolutions, said, through his Spokesman, that he is not looking for excuses to leave the dialogue because such a move would perpetuate the division of Cyprus.

    [07] Swedish Minister - Cyprus - EU

    Nicosia, Sep 15 (CNA) -- Minister of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Gender Equality of Sweden Margareta Winberg has said enlargement is one of the top priorities of her country's European Union (EU) presidency, beginning January 1st 2001.

    She stressed the Swedish presidency will push the European Commission to promote Cyprus' accession to the EU, but it will also push Cyprus to complete its harmonisation process.

    [08] President Clerides - Cyprus talks

    by Maria Myles New York, Sep 15 (CNA) - The question of territory was discussed here today at a meeting President Glafcos Clerides had at the UN, as part of the ongoing UN-led proximity talks, which got underway here Tuesday.

    After the two hour long meeting, President Clerides said "we have discussed the question of the extent of territory which would be the two cantons". CNA/MM/RG/MCH/2000

    [09] Cyprus talks - Political party leaders

    by Maria Myles New York, Sep 15 (CNA) - Political leaders, accompanying President Glafcos Clerides here for the UN-led peace talks, have expressed in their majority, with the exception of the ruling Democratic Rally leader, their dissatisfaction with assurances given by the UN in relation to a statement UN Secretary General Kofi Annan made on Tuesday on the talks.

    However, all party leaders said they would remain here to monitor developments back the efforts of the Greek Cypriot side to support its positions in the talks.
