    [01] President Clerides - Cyprus talks

    by Maria Chrysanthou New York, Sep 11 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides described meetings he has had in New York as constructive. He specifically referred to the talks between US President Bill Clinton and his Turkish counterpart Ahmed Necet Sezer, who discussed the Cyprus problem.

    Invited to comment on meetings President Clerides had on the sidelines of the UN Millenium Summit regarding the Cyprus issue, he said "they have been so far quite good, constructive". CNA/MCH/RG/GP/2000

    [02] Tourism - Increase in arrivals

    Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) - An increase of 12,3 percent was recorded in tourist arrivals during the period January-July 2000, compared to the same period last year.

    A total of 1.471.734 tourists visited this east Mediterranean island tourist resort during the first half of the year, compared to 1.310.592 during the first six months of 1999.

    During the same period, income from tourism rose by 14,8 percent.

    Official figures indicate that arrivals in July this year increased by 12,5 percent, compared to the same month in 1999. CNA/MK/RG/GP/2000

    [03] New Greek Ambassador - Arrival - Statement

    Larnaca, Sep 11 (CNA) - Greece's new Ambassador to Cyprus, Christos Panagopoulos, arrived on the island today conveying a message of support and cooperation from Athens.

    Speaking on his arrival at Larnaca Airport, Panagopoulos said that Greece and Cyprus are struggling for a solution to the Cyprus problem and the island's accession to the European Union, noting that as long as Turkish intransigence continues, the two countries must upgrade the island's defence capability.

    [04] Carmen - Last performance

    Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) - The curtain falls tonight on the last performance of the opera "Carmen" of George Bizet, held in the context of the "Paphos Aphrodite Festival 2000" at the medieval castle in the western coastal town of Paphos.

    The performances, directed by Belgian Albert Andre Lheureux, began last Friday with a total of 13 actors and 30 others in secondary parts, with French Beatrice Uria Monzon in the leading role of Carmen and American Richard Leech as Don Jose. CNA/RG/GP/2000
