    State budget - Finance minister

Nicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) - The cabinet approved today the 2001 state budget, which provides for 2.417,0 million Cyprus pounds in expenditure and 1.576,0 m. in revenue, and will then be tabled to the House for approval, Finance Minister Takis Klerides announced here today after a two-hour long meeting (one Cyprus pounds is about two US dollars).

He said the satisfactory development in 2000 does not justify complacency and predicted "encouraging prospects for 2001" with an estimated rate of growth at 4,5 per cent and unemployment falling to around 3,3 per cent.

President Clerides - Greek - Turkish Cypriot businessmen

Íicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) -- President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides expressed today his full support to the workings of the Brussels Group, comprising Greek and Turkish Cypriot businessmen.

The Turkish Cypriots also raised the issue of what they call an economic embargo, which they believe Greek Cypriots are imposing on them but is essentially a direct result of the continuing Turkish occupation of the island's northern areas, and they demanded that it be lifted.

    Spokesman - Cyprus - Turkey

Nicosia, Aug 31 (CNA) -- Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou has described as totally unacceptable remarks by the Turkish Cypriot leader that the UN- sponsored peace talks would come to an end, if Cyprus moves closer to joining the European Union's military army.

"This is also a provocation for the EU, a kind of censure against the EU and an attempt to direct its procedures," Papapetrou said, stressing that Cyprus' accession is not subject to the consent or the terms or threats of any other third country, let alone a non recognised state entity.

[06] Agreement - Mediterranean Plane Tour

Larnaca, Aug 31 (CNA) -- Minister of Communications and Works Averof Neophytou signed today, on behalf of President Glafcos Clerides, an agreement to become part of the Mediterranean Plane Tour, promoted by the International Centre for Peace Among Peoples, based in Assisi, Italy.

Speaking after a ceremony at Larnaca airport, Neophytou said Cyprus could not be absent from such an effort which aims at promoting equality and coordination among the people of the Mediterranean, even though Cyprus still has to deal with the continuous occupation of Turkish troops since they invaded the island in 1974.
