    [02] Government Spokesman - Cyprus - Azerbaijan

Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA) - Azerbaijan had requested the help of the Republic of Cyprus to become a member of the Council of Europe and Cyprus agreed to provide that assistance, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today, noting that when the island suggested establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries, Turkey intervened and brought the process to a halt.

Commenting on Turkish press reports, Papapetrou said that "Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, had stated that President Glafcos Clerides sent a letter to the Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev, requesting the establishment of diplomatic relations".

[04] Government Spokesman - Cyprus problem - Talks

Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA) - Government Spokesman, Michalis Papapetrou, said today that ironing out Greco-Turkish relations would be unthinkable, as long as Turkey continues to occupy the northern third of Cyprus, as it has done since it invaded the island in 1974.

He also said he was not very optimistic about the outcome of negotiations on the Cyprus problem, after Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, urged President Glafcos Clerides yesterday to attend UN-led proximity talks as leaders of two separate states, in order to reach a settlement.

    [05] AKEL - Stockholm - European left-wing parties

Nicosia, Aug 30 (CNA) - The Cyprus problem and its effect on peace in the south- east Mediterranean will be among topics to be discussed in the context of a meeting of European left-wing and progressive parties, to be attended by 300 delegates in Stockholm, between September 1 and 3, at the initiative of the Swedish Left-wing Party.

Cyprus left-wing AKEL aims at having a resolution approved which would express the support of European left-wing parties for a bicommunal federation in Cyprus, based on UN resolutions and the high level agreements of 1977 and 1979 the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides have signed.
