[01] Russian Ambassador - Cyprus question - Chechnya

Nicosia, Aug 8 (CNA) - Russian Ambassador in Nicosia Vladimir Pavlinov today expressed the view that direct talks would be more valuable in the efforts to reach a settlement in Cyprus and reiterated his country's support to UN resolutions providing for the establishment of a bizonal, bicommunal federation on the island.

Pavlinov called on House President Spyros Kyprianou to convey a written message from the Russian Duma Speaker asking for support to his country's efforts to overcome certain difficulties it is facing within the Council of Europe (CoE), as a result of the situation in Chechnya.

[04] House President - Cyprus question

Nicosia, Aug 8 (CNA) - House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou today gave his full backing to President Glafcos Clerides on his stance during the two-week long proximity talks, held earlier this month in Geneva, as well as to some thoughts the President has expressed on the next round of UN-led talks scheduled for September.

Talking to reporters after his first meeting with the President since his return from Geneva, Kyprianou expressed the view that "the Cyprus question is at the worst stage it has been since the 1974" Turkish invasion and occupation of 37 percent of the island's territory.

    [05] Greek-American leaders - US - Cyprus

Nicosia, Aug 8 (CNA) -- Greek-American leaders call on US President Bill Clinton and the country's Ambassador to the UN Richard Holbrooke to fully utilise major pressures they created for a settlement to the Cyprus question.

In letters to Clinton and Holbrooke, they stress that a solution built on the European Union (EU) base and in accordance with UN resolutions will dramatically improve the future for Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Greeks and Turks, and promote the security interests of all Americans.

[06] Foreign Minister - Cyprus peace talks

Nicosia, Aug 8 (CNA) - The people of Cyprus should not have high expectations from the on-going talks for a settlement on the island as the Turkish side continues to be intransigent, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has said, underlining that the Greek Cypriot side will never accept a solution that is not within the framework set out in UN resolutions.

The Foreign Minister, who held a press conference today in the light of the third round of Cyprus proximity talks that ended in Geneva last week, called for substantive negotiations and announced he will have a meeting in Athens with his Greek counterpart George Papandreou towards the end of this month.

[07] Cyprus Foreign Minister - UN - Turkish provocations

Nicosia, Aug 8 (CNA) - Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides today underlined that the Security Council must respond to a letter by UN chief Kofi Annan asking for its support in the restoration of the status quo ante in the area of Stovilia, where the Turkish occupation troops recently erected a new illegal checkpoint.

He also told a press conference that a government decision not to allow Turkish Cypriots to pass through the areas under its control in order to visit the Kokkina enclave was not an act of revenge, but a logical move after the occupation regime had closed some of UNFICYP's crossing points.
