    [02] Party leaders - British High Commissioner

    by Myria Antoniadou Geneva, Aug 1 (CNA) -- Social Democrats leader Vassos Lyssarides and United Democrats leader George Vassiliou, accompanying President Glafcos Clerides to Geneva for UN-led proximity talks, had separate meetings today with British High Commissioner to Cyprus Edward Clay.

    Speaking to the press, Lyssarides stressed that only if UN Secretary General's Special adviser on Cyprus defines the framework of the next round of talks can the current round lead to a new one. On his part Vassiliou said he expressed to the High Commissioner his dissatisfaction with the lack of any substantive negotiations.

    [03] House President - New Israeli President - Congratulations

    Nicosia, Aug 1 (CNA) -- President of the House of Representatives Spyros Kyprianou has sent a congratulatory telegram to the new President of Israel Moshe Katsav, expressing confidence that during his presidency relations between the two countries will be strengthened.

    In his message Kyprianou congratulates Israel's new President on his election and wishes him "every success in his task".

    [05] Turkish Cypriot leader - Alvaro de Soto

    Geneva, Aug 1 (CNA)-- Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and UN Secretary General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto had an hour-long meeting today in the framework of on-going UN-led proximity talks.

    Denktash said he would meet with the UN official again tomorrow, but refrained from making any other statements to the press.

    [06] Cyprus - Bulgaria - Agreement

    Nicosia, Aug 1 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Bulgaria have initialled a new agreement for the avoidance of double taxation which is to be signed in September.

    The Bulgarian Parliament anulled in May 2000 the previous agreement existing since 1986.

    [07] Cyprus - Greece - Defence

    Athens, Aug 1 (CNA) -- The improvement of Greco-Turkish relations depends on Turkey's contribution to a just solution of the Cyprus question, Greek Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos has said, stressing that the European Union expects Ankara to make concessions on Cyprus.

    Cyprus Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos said the effort to maintain the country's defences is continuous, even if peace talks are taking place.

    [08] De Soto - Statements

    by Myria Antoniadou Geneva, Aug 1 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto considers that there is an agreement for the continuation of proximity talks on 12 September in New York and that no formula is needed for the process to move forward.

    Speaking shortly before his meeting here today with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, the UN official also said the substance of the Cyprus problem was discussed, which, as he noted, unavoidably leads to discussion of details.
