    [01] President Clerides - British High Commissioner

    Nicosia, Jul 19 (CNA) - British High Commissioner to Cyprus, Edward Clay, met today with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and discussed with him "matters of joint concern".

    Speaking after the meeting, Clay said he met with the President "chiefly to introduce my new Deputy High Commissioner, Philip Barter".

    [04] House President - Syrian President - Congratulations

    Nicosia, Jul 19 (CNA) - House of Representatives President, Spyros Kyprianou, has sent a telegramme to the new Syrian President, Bashar al Assad, congratulating him on his election to the presidency of his country.

    Kyprianou notes that al Assad's election coincides with an especially crucial phase for the Middle East and expresses hope that permanent peace would finally prevail, according to the principles of international law and UN resolutions. CNA/RG/MCH/2000

    [05] President Clerides - Message - Coup - Invasion

    Nicosia, Jul 19 (CNA) - Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides said today the Greek Cypriot side would be attending talks on the Cyprus problem ready to negotiate seriously, with courage and flexibility, depending on the stand of the representatives of the Turkish Cypriot community.

    In a message on the occasion of the anniversaries of the coup and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, President Clerides expressed hope that the international community would succeed this time in persuading Ankara to acquire the political will required to resolve the Cyprus problem.

    [06] Britain - Conservative Party - Cyprus - Invasion

    Nicosia, Jul 19 (CNA) - British Shadow Foreign Secretary, MP Francis Maude, assured in a statement that his party "remains committed to the search for a settlement in Cyprus and the accession of Cyprus to the European Union".

    In his statement, to mark the occasion of the anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of the northern third of the island, Maude notes that the Conservative Party is "delighted with the progress Cyprus has made towards membership" of the European Union and hopes that "a bizonal bicommunal federal arrangement, based on UN resolutions, can be achieved".
