    [01] Denktash - De Soto - Talks

    Geneva, Jul 12 (CNA) - Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, confirmed that UN officials conducting the Cyprus proximity talks have given ideas to the sides as "food for thought".

    Stepping out of a news blackout after a 40-minute meeting with the UN chief's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, at UN headquarters in Geneva, Denktash told journalists "we will take this back to Cyprus and we will come back on the 24th" of July.

    [03] Christian Democrats - Cyprus - Strovilia

    Nicosia, Jul 12 (CNA) - The Christian Democrat and People's Parties International CDI has condemned the recent violation of the status quo in Cyprus by the Turkish occupation troops in Strovilia area, in south-east Cyprus, where they set up a new checkpoint.

    In a statement, CDI President, Ricardo Arias Calderon, says "we deeply deplore and condemn this aggressive act, which constitutes a gross violation of the numerous UN Security Council resolutions since 1974", when Turkey invaded and occupied the island's northern third.

    [04] Alvaro de Soto - Written statement

    by Myria Antoniadou Geneva, Jul 12 (CNA) - The UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, said today in a written statement that he has asked both sides on the island to reflect upon some points he has put to them and return to Geneva on July 24 with their reactions.

    In his statement, de Soto notes that "the Cyprus proximity talks adjourned today and will resume in Geneva on July 24", adding that "the talks will proceed until around August 4", when there will be further recess, "after which talks will resume in New York on September 12 and go into early October".

    [05] Alvaro de Soto - Press conference

    by Myria Antoniadou Geneva, Jul 12 (CNA) - The UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, has said that at today's meetings in Geneva with the two sides in Cyprus he verbally gave his preliminary thoughts to reflect upon and give their reaction when they return to Geneva on July 24.

    Speaking at a press conference after the end of seven days of meetings in Geneva, de Soto said he has not asked the parties to give their approval of his ideas but hopes they will come back with more indication as to where they stand.

    [06] "Avrupa" - International interest

    Nicosia, Jul 12 (CNA) - The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) informed the Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ) today that it would be sending a representative to Nicosia to convey the demand of the international journalist family to end the silencing of Turkish Cypriot daily "Avrupa" and to release its journalists, including its Editor-in- Chief, Siener Levent, illegally arrested by the Turkish occupation regime.

    According to the UCJ, the IFJ's delegate will try to meet with the "detainees" in the Turkish- occupied areas of the Republic, to visit the offices of "Avrupa" and make representations to Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, and the representatives of the United Nations and the European Union in Cyprus, with an aim to secure the smooth publication of the Turkish Cypriot daily and the release of its journalists.
