  • [01] UNFICYP - Measures - Reaction Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) -- UN Acting Resident Representative, Zbigniew Wlosowicz will be meeting this afternoon Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, a day after the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus announced restrictions in the movement of UNFICYP. UNFICYP spokesperson Sarah Russell told CNA that Wlosowicz will meet Denktash to discuss "the measures which are in place and have taken effect".

  • [04] Cyprus government - Turkish Cypriot measures against UNFICYP Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) - The Cyprus government today expressed regret with the measures announced by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash against the UN peace- keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), underlining that they are not in line with UN decisions. Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou called on the international community to question these measures, which the government is examining both in their political and legal context.

  • [05] Cypriot and Swedish municipalities - Cooperation Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) - The southern coastal town of Limassol is among 31 cities to be twinned with Swedish towns after a decision by the Swedish government to promote cooperation with European Union members and applicant states, that will be intensified during the period it will be holding the Union's rotating Presidency in the first half of 2001. The Swedish Association of Local Authorities, commissioned by the government, choose 31 out of 101 applications to participate in the "Twin- Town 2001" project, that aims at further promoting contacts between Swedes and citizens of other European countries and raise awareness over the need for cooperation.

  • [06] Cyprus - Council of Europe - Parliamentary Assembly Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) -- Forty-eight European parliamentarians from 18 countries call on all national sport authorities to demonstrate full respect to international legality and avoid acts undermining directly or indirectly the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus. The MPs, all of whom are members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, have signed a relevant written declaration circulated by Cyprus' delegation to the Assembly.

  • [07] Cyprus - Sri Lanka - Shipping agreement Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) - Cyprus and Sri Lanka today signed a cooperation agreement in the shipping field, providing for cooperation in employment issues, the improvement of sailors' working and living conditions and the acceptance of certificates issued by each country. The agreement was signed in Nicosia by Minister of Communication and Works Averof Neophytou and Sri Lanka's Shipping Minister Caluadewagey Nanda Mathew, who underlined its importance in the further development of relations between the two countries. It also provides for cooperation in the case of nautical accidents and that the ships of each country will not enter closed ports of the other.

  • [09] UNFICYP - Denktash - Protest Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) - UN Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Chief of Mission Zbioniew Wlosovicz today handed a letter to Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash formally protesting the measures he imposed since this morning against the Force as they create obstacles in its smooth operation. In his letter with which he registers a formal protest, Wlosovicz expresses "deep disappointment" with the measures and the hope Mr Denktash will "urgently reconsider" as they impede UNFICYP's "capacity to carry out its mandate".

  • [09] House President - Parties - UNFICYP Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) - Cyprus House of Representatives President Spyros Kyprianou and political parties have strongly condemned a decision by the illegal regime in the Turkish occupied areas of the island to impose measures against the UN Peace-Keeping Force here (UNFICYP), stressing they are contrary to the international oganisation's decisions and undermine its credibility. "The measures are unacceptable and illegal," Kyprianou said echoing the position expressed earlier by the Cyprus government, adding that the "UN should categorically reject them and condemn the illegal regime for this illegal action."
