[01] UN Special Advisor - Press conference

Nicosia, Jun 18(CNA) – The UN Secretary General expects President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to be in Geneva for the July talks, signaling the beginning of a "continous and intensified process" with a view to reaching a "comprehensive settlement" of the Cyprus problem, UN Secretary General's Special Advisor for Cyprus Alvaro de Soto told a press conference here today.

Speaking after four days of talks, overshadowed by ambigious remarks on the part of the Turkish Cypriots with regard to their participation in the talks, de Soto said the process of the talks could be interrupted only if the needs of the talks dictate so.

He pointed out that the UN intends to continue addressing the substance of the issues to encourage the two parties to "actually deal with the central issues" identified by the UN (constitution, territory, security, refugees- property).

The Peruvian diplomat, in Cyprus for the second time, noted the "substantial improvement" of climate of efforts for a solution due to the international circumstances in recent months and particularly the rapprochement between Greece and Turkey, but also acknowledged that there will be difficulties.

He expressed hope that Denktash's intense displeasure of a UN move to drop an addendum in this week's resolution, renewing UNFICYP's mandate, would not affect the talks.
