    [02] Spokesman - Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, May 29 (CNA) -- The period between now and autumn offers and opportunity for progress to be achieved in the UN-sponsored talks on Cyprus, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here Monday.

    He also said no proposals have been submitted to the government, adding that when such proposals are on the table, these will be seriously examined both by the government and the National Council, provided they do not contain any element for recognition of the illegal regime in the northern Turkish occupied areas of the island.

    [03] Education Minister - Slovakia

    Nicosia, May 29 (CNA) -- Education and Culture Minister, Ouranios Ioannides, leaves for Bratislava, Slovakia this evening for a three day visit at the invitation of his Slovak counterpart, Milan Ftacnik.

    During his visit, Ioannides will hold official talks with members of the Slovakian government to discuss issues concerning education and culture, an official statement said here Monday.

    [05] Tourism - Ôravel statistics - April

    Nicosia, May 29 (CNA) -- Arrival of tourists in April 2000 recorded an increase of 23,2 per cent, reaching 221,785 compared to 180.76 in the corresponding month last year, with tourists mainly arriving from European Union countries, especially the UK.

    According to Statistical Service records, for the period January-April 2000 arrivals of tourists reached 508.068 compared to 438.353 in April 1999, marking an increase of 15,9%.

    [06] EU Commissioner - Meeting - Cyprus

    Nicosia, May 29 (CNA) -- European Union Commissioner responsible for Industry and Information Society, Erkki Liikanen, will be in Cyprus next month on the occasion of the third meeting of EU industry ministers and their counterparts from Mediterranean countries.

    This is the first time the meeting is taking place outside the EU. It will be co-chaired by Cyprus and Portugal, the current rotating EU presidency, who hands over the chair to France in July.
