    [01] PSEKA Conference - US Congressmen

    Washington, May 18 (CNA) -- US Congressmen have fully backed UN-led efforts for a just and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem, describing the present status quo on the island as unacceptable, They expressed the view that improved Greco-Turkish relations create an atmosphere of optimism in regards to Cyprus as well.

    Speaking at the 11th annual International Coordinating Committee - Justice for Cyprus and the Council of Hellenes Abroad (PSEKA/SAE) Conference here, yesterday, Congressman Benjamin Gilman pointed to Turkey's obligations as a candidate for accession to the European Union.

    [02] Eumedis - Seminar

    Nicosia, May 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus will host a one-day seminar on the newly- launched programme of the European Union Eumedis (Euro-mediterranean information society intiative), one of the organisers Stelios Himonas, of the Communications and Works Ministry, said here today at a press conference.

    Describing this initiative as the largest such programme, he said it aims at the development of the Euro-mediterranean Information Society and the promotion of Internet-based interconnection between the European and the Mediterranean research networks, in the areas of education, electronic commerce, health, tourism, business, innovation and cultural heritage and industry.

    Prolonged sunny periods turning to showery ones at times. The wind light to fresh at times. The temperature between 15C min. and 29C max.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday 21/05/2000 to 22/05/2000

    Sunny with risk of anisol shower on Sunday. The temperature to persist between 15C Min. and 29C Max. sunny with the temperature rising between 18C min. and 32C max on Monday.

    [04] Chairmen - Parliamentary committees - EU

    Nicosia, May 18 (CNA) -- The chairmen of the Committees dealing with the European Affairs at National Parliaments of Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic expressed hope that the extended number of the negotiating candidate countries should not lead to the overburdening of the EU capacity.

    They also hoped it would not slow down the pace of negotiations and that the Inter-Governmental Conference of the EU institutional reform will be completed until the end of this year.

    [05] Cyprus - Rally Tour

    Nicosia, May 18 (CNA) -- The Rally Tour will take place on the east Mediterranean island of Cyprus on June 17-18. The event is the fifth of eight Middle East Rally Championship rounds.

    Entries have already been received from the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Lebanon and the Cyprus Automobile Association, the event's organisers, expect all the top Middle East contenders to participate.
