    [01] Annual PSEKA Conference

    by Demetris Apokis Washington, May 15 (CNA) -- US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has indicated that she was personally working with President Bill Clinton on the Cyprus issue, according to the organisers of the 11th annual conference of the International Coordinating Committee - Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), which gets underway here Tuesday.

    This year's conference, from May 16-18, will be attended by over 170 participants from the US and overseas, who will be meeting over 40 of America's top foreign policy-makers. The meeting takes place just weeks before the third round of UN-led Cyprus peace talks.

    [02] Nea Zealand Health Minister - Visit

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- New Zealand Minister of Health and Racing Annette King will visit Cyprus from Thursday to Saturday this week to discuss health related issues and have the opportunity to be informed about the latest developments in the Cyprus peace effort.

    King, who arrives here early Thursday morning, is scheduled to see Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and Acting Health Minister, Minister of Education and Culture Ouranios Ioannides.

    [03] Cyprus Foreign Minister - Cook

    London, May 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, in London for a meeting with his British counterpart Robin Cook, will visit former Cyprus President George Vasiliou in hospital later today.

    Kasoulides is set to meet Cook Tuesday morning to discuss the Cyprus peace process and Cyprus' relations with the European Union.

    [04] Defence Minister - National Guard Commander

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos and National Guard Commander, Lieutenant General Evangelos Florakis, had their first meeting today to discuss cooperation betwen the Republic's armed forces and the ministry in charge of the country's defences.

    Florakis, who arrived here Friday from Greece to succeed outgoing Demetrios Demou, said his main goal is to increase the defence capability of the National Guard, adding that the least he hopes to achieve is to maintain the current level of readiness in the armed forces.

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- Androulla Laniti, 50, has been appointed Director of the Cyprus Republic's Press and Information Office (PIO).

    Laniti, who has been working with PIO since 1976, assumed office today.

    [06] Cyprus - Cuba - Shipping agreement

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- Cuban Transport Deputy Minister Fransisco Reyes Prats and Director responsible for shipping and river transport Rupen de la Torre Molina are in Cyprus to sign an agreement on merchant shipping.

    According to an official announcement here the Cuban officials visited the Merchant Shipping department in Limassol and the town port while tomorrow they will meet with Minister of Communications and Works Averof Neophytou and sign the agreement.

    [07] Cabinet - Floating desalination plant

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) - The Cyprus Council of Ministers today approved a bill for the construction of a floating desalination plant producing 25 thousand cubic metres of water per day in the Moni area, east of the coastal town of Limassol. The bill will be tabled later today in the House of Representatives for final approval.

    Announcing the decision after a cabinet meeting at a private clinic in Nicosia, where President Glafcos Clerides is recovering from an operation to remove a polyp from his large intestine, Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Costas Themistocleous said this is a temporary measure until two permanent desalination plants are constructed.

    [08] Spokesman - Sir David - Cyprus talks

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- Britain's Special Representative for Cyprus Sir David Hannay arrives in Cyprus on June 7 for talks with President Glafcos Clerides, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou announced here today.

    Without excluding the possibility of more foreign envoys visiting the area around this period, Papapetrou said regarding the third round of the UN- sponsored proximity negotiations, "we are waiting from the UN the announcement of the date and venue of the talks".

    [09] Cyprus - Albania - Delegation

    Nicosia, May 15 (CNA) -- Good relations between Cyprus and Albania should develop further in all fields to the mutual interest, said Albanian Foreign Minister Paskal Milo.

    He made this statement to a Cypriot mission which visited Albania recently, an official press release issued here today said.
