    [01] Miss Universe 2000 - Rehearsal

    By Demetra Molyva Nicosia, May 10 (CNA) -- Cypriots on Tuesday night had free entrance to a magnificent pre-taped rehearsal of the entry number to the final telecast of the Miss Universe 2000 pageant which will be staged in Nicosia on Saturday.

    The 79 contestants taking part in the 49th Miss Universe pageant, in white ancient Greek dresses designed by Botswana-based Cypriot designer Angelo John Lambrou, danced to a modern techno, mystic choreography symbolising elements of old and new and the unity of the universe. Four artists performed stunning aerial numbers.

    [02] Vassiliou - Health - Surgery

    London, May 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus' EU Chief Negotiator and President of the United Democrats party George Vassiliou is today undergoing tests at the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery to determine his condition after a benign tumour was found on his cerebellum.

    Vassiliou, who arrived in London late last night accompanied by members of his family and doctor Janet Stylianaki, was immediately admitted to hospital and is expected to be operated upon later today by professor Allan Crockard.

    [03] President Clerides - Health Minister

    Nicosia, May 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glacos Clerides is expected to return home by this weekend, Health Minister Frixos Savvides told reporters today, after visiting Clerides at the clinic where he is recovering from an operation to remove a polyp from his large intestine.

    Savvides said the 81-year-old President, who underwent surgery last Friday, is in good shape and has already started work.

    [04] Cyprus Foreign Minister - Italian counterpart

    Nicosia, May 10 (CNA) - Italian Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini has expressed certainty that Cyprus will become a member of the European Union, in the next enlargement expected to take place in the year 2003.

    According to an official announcement, in a meeting yesterday in Rome with his Cypriot counterpart Ioannis Kasoulides, Dini referred to the new dynamic created after the EU Helsinki summit held last December, which gave Turkey a candidate status and reaffirmed that Cyprus can join its ranks even if a settlement to its political problem is not reached.

    [05] Spokesman - Vassiliou - Health

    Nicosia, May 10 (CNA) -- Surgery to remove a benign brain tumour from George Vassiliou, former Cyprus President and the Republic's chief negotiator with the European Union, is expected to end later this afternoon, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    "Doctors are optimistic and believe the operation will last about five hours and is likely to finish at around 16.00 local time (13.00 GMT)," he told his daily press briefing.

    [06] Missing - War Dead - Identifications

    Nicosia, May 10 (CNA) -- The government intends to publicise the list of missing persons since the 1974 Turkish invasion by 22 June, it was officially announced. The list has so far been kept confidential.

    The government also said more identifications of remains of war dead or missing persons, exhumed from two local cemeteries last summer, will be announced this week.
