    [02] Greek and Turkish Cypriot parties - Meeting

    Nicosia, Apr 17 (CNA) - Left-wing AKEL General Secretary Demetris Christofias met today at his office with Turkish Cypriot Patriotic Unity Movement leader, Izzet Izcan, with whom he discussed the Cyprus problem, the prospects of talks to solve it and rapprochement between the two sides.

    Speaking after the meeting, both Christofias and Izcan agreed that substantive talks must take place to solve the Cyprus problem, based on UN resolutions and the high level agreements of 1977 and 1979 and that the only solution that can reunite the country is that of a federation.

    [03] Cyprus - FIR - Violations - NATO manoeuvres

    Nicosia, Apr 17 (CNA) - Defence Ministry Spokesman, Andreas Charides, confirmed today that last week Turkish warplanes violated the airspace of Cyprus and Nicosia FIR (Flight Information Region).

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou told his daily press briefing that new representations were to be made today to NATO members who have not indicated whether they would be participating in military manoeuvres, under Turkish aegis, in the eastern Mediterranean.

    [05] House President - Dukakis

    Nicosia, Apr 17 (CNA) - President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou, today received former Governor of Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis, who said that "we are seeing some progress" in the Cyprus problem.

    Speaking after the meeting, Dukakis said that "the Greek American community loves and respects Cyprus, we want to be as helpful as we can, we know the US must play a pivotal role here". CNA/RG/MM/2000

    [06] Cyprus - AIDS - Report

    Nicosia, Apr 17 (CNA) - A total of 333 HIV positive cases were diagnosed in Cyprus from 1986 until the end of March 2000, of which 200 were locals and 133 foreigners.

    According to an official report, 23 cases occurred in 1999, of which 12 were locals, while during the first quarter of the year 2000, there were eight new HIV positive cases, out of which three were foreigners. CNA/RG/̀̀/2000

    [07] Greek Foreign Minister - Denktash - Meeting

    Athens, Apr 17 (CNA) - Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou said today he would meet Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, when both are citizens of the European Union and when there are no artificial or other obstacles in Cyprus.

    Commenting on a statement by Denktash, that he was willing to visit Athens and meet with the Greek Minister, Papandreou said "I would gladly meet with Mr. Denktash when both of us as European citizens, citizens of the European Union, would be able to cross Cyprus from one end to the other, without artificial or other obstacles".

    [08] Minister of Communications - Israeli Deputy PM

    Nicosia, Apr, 17 (CNA)-- Minister of Communications and Works Averof Neophytou and Deputy Prime Minsiter and Minister of Communications of Israel Benjamin Ben- Elieser examined the prospects of cooperation between their countries in the area of telecommunications in a meeting held today.

    Speaking after the meeting, Neophytou said that Cyprus may constitute a bridge between the Middle East and Europe, pointing to the advantages of bilateral cooperation.

    [09] Turkey - Parliamentary Delegation - OSCE

    Nicosia, Ápr 17(CNA) - In October this year the southern coastal town of Limassol will host a specialized seminar of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), in cooperation with the House of Representatives.

    The decision was taken in Turkey by an Assembly committee meeting last week.
