    [01] Leukeamia boy - USA - Chemotherapy

    Nicosia, Apr 1 (CNA) - The 6-year-old Greek Cypriot boy, Andreas Vassiliou, who stirred humanitarian feelings among Greek and Turkish Cypriots, as well as Greeks and Turks regarding his urgent need for a bone marrow transplant to tackle his leukeamia, departed for the United States early this morning.

    Andreas, accompanied by his parents, left for Houston, Texas, where he will undergo a four-week chemotherapy programme, in order to prepare for a bone marrow transplant. CNA/RG/جت/2000

    [02] Christodoula March - Greek actor

    Nicosia, Apr 1 (CNA) - Popular Greek actor, Apostolos Gletsos, arrives in Cyprus today, to participate in events organised in the context of the 25th Christodoula March to collect funds for the campaign of the Anti-Cancer Association.

    To back the campaign, the Bank of Cyprus will host an "Athletic Morning" tomorrow, which includes various parachuting and reserve commando shows, with Gletsos as a guest of honour, and a football match between senior Bank of Cyprus officers and senior trade unionists of the banking sector.     [03] Karaiskakion Foundation - March

    The association "Friends of the Karaiskakion Foundation" are organising a "Pancyprian Humanitarian March" today, to collect 600 thousand pounds (one CY pound is about two US dollars) to financially support this charity organisation, which is desperately in need of funds.

    Participating in the event are runners, cyclists and bikers, who will cover a total of five routes starting from points around the free areas of the Republic and ending at the Karaiskakion Foundation in Nicosia. CNA/RG/جت/2000

    [04] Larnaca Port - Cruise ship

    Nicosia, Apr 1 (CNA) - The Larnaca port operates as from today as a passenger and tourist port.

    This morning, the cruise ship "Serenade", flying the Bahamas flag, sailed into the port, transporting 380 passengers. The ship will conduct cruises from Haifa, Israel, to Larnaca. CNA/RG/جت/2000

    [05] Cyprus commemorates liberation struggle

    Nicosia, Apr 1 (CNA) - Cyprus is commemorating today the anniversary of the four-year struggle in the 1950s to rid the island of British colonial rule. The struggle led to the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960.

    A church service was held at Saint John's Cathedral in Nicosia, officiated by the Primate of the Church of Cyprus Archbishop Chrysostomos, and attended by President Glafcos Clerides.
