    [01] Cyprus and Israel - Agreements

    by Maria Chrysanthou Jerusalem, Mar 29 (CNA) - The Foreign Ministers of Cyprus and Israel, Ioannis Kasoulides and David Levy, respectively, signed three agreements today.

    The first agreement concerns mutual assistance between the custom administrations of the two countries, the second is a protocol on consultation between the two Foreign Ministries, and the third is a programme of cooperation in the field of culture, education and science for the period 2000-2002.     [04] Cyprus - Japan - G8

    Nicosia, Mar 29 (CNA) - Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary, Andreas Pirishis, who is visiting Japan, requested the continuation and intensification of the support by Japan and the G8 in UN efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, during a meeting he had with State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Ichita Yamamoto.

    Yamamoto reassured that Japan closely follows developments in the UN-led proximity talks on the Cyprus problem and supports the dialogue and a solution of the problem based on UN resolutions. CNA/RG/MA/2000

    [05] Cyprus Foreign Minister - Statements - Meeting with Levy

    by Maria Chrysanthou Jerusalem, Mar 29 (CNA) - Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, currently in Israel accompanying President Glafcos Clerides on a four-day state visit, said today that Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy believes Cyprus could be a bridge between Europe and the Middle East.

    According to Kasoulides, during their meeting Levy said he established the "Gesher" party, which means "bridge", and that "Cyprus can be the 'Gesher' between Europe and the Middle East, not only from an economic point of view, but also as a bridge for the new security system against the new enemies of democracy and freedom, such as organised crime, drug trafficking and terrorism".     [06] Government Spokesman - Statements

    By Maria Chrysanthou Jerusalem, Mar 29 (CNA) - Bilateral relations and efforts to peacefully solve the Middle East question and the Cyprus problem, were discussed today at a meeting between President Glafcos Clerides and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, who reaffirmed his country's intention to contribute in efforts to solve Cyprus' political issue.

    Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou told CNA that President Clerides and Barak both acknowledged a satisfactory development in relations between their countries, to the benefit of both Cyprus and Israel, and the region in general.

    [07] Greek and Turkish Cypriot trade unions - Meeting

    Nicosia, Mar 29 (CNA) - A three-member delegation from Turkish Cypriot trade union TURK-SEN, led by its President Older Konukoglu, today visited the Cyprus Workers' Confederation (SEK) in the government-controlled areas of the Republic.

    During their talks, Konugoglu and SEK General Secretary Demetris Kittenis reaffirmed their unions' support towards talks on the Cyprus problem, aimed at a federal solution, and reiterated their commitment to work for rapprochement between the two communities on the island, thus contributing in efforts to reunite Cyprus.     [08] Apostolos Andreas monastery - 6-year-old - Leukeamia

    Nicosia, Mar 29 (CNA) - The family and relatives of 6-year-old Andreas Vassiliou, who is suffering from leukeamia and urgently needs a bone marrow transplant, today visited the Apostolos Andreas monastery in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.

    The illegal regime in the north yesterday granted the family's wish to visit the monastery to pray, and so a bus of 35 persons, comprising family and eight reporters, crossed over into the Turkish occupied areas this morning and returned this afternoon. CNA/FZ/RG/MA/2000

    [09] President Clerides - Israeli President - Dinner

    Nicosia, Mar 29 (CNA) - Israeli President Ezer Weizman, speaking at a dinner in honour of President Glafcos Clerides, reaffirmed today that his country hopes for a solution to the Cyprus problem and supports the island's accession to the European Union.

    President Clerides said that despite Cyprus' disappointment regarding efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, the country derives strength from the progress of the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.
