    [01] President - Finnish Envoy

    Nicosia, Mar 27 (CNA) -- Finland's envoy for Cyprus Jaakko Blomberg believes there is now a "unique opportunity and a new sense of dynamism" to help bring about a solution which should not be missed.

    He also said external factors, such as improved Greco-Turkish ties, favour a solution but it is up to the parties themselves to agree on a settlement, which should be based on the principles outlined by the UN Secretary General.

    [04] Cyprus - Nauru - Diplomatic relations

    Nicosia, Mar 27 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Nauru have signed an agreement to establish diplomatic relations, according to an official announcement issued today.

    The agreement was signed last Thursday, at the Cyprus permanent mission to the UN in New York, by the permanent representatives of the two countries, Sotos Zackhaios and Vinci Clodumar.

    [05] Cyprus - European Radiocommunication Committee - 28th

    meeting Nicosia, Mar 27 (CNA) -- The 28th meeting of the European Radiocommunication Committee (ERC) opened here today, with the participation of 43 representatives of the European Conference of Post and Telecommunications administration (CEPT) member states, as well as the European Commission and other European Telecommunications Organisations.

    Participants will discuss issues such as the draft decisions on extending the frequency bands for the introduction of terrestrial universal mobile telecommunications systems and the licensing of satellite interactive terminals.

    [06] AKEL General Secretary - Statements on visit to Greece

    Larnaca, Mar 27 (CNA) -- General Secretary of left-wing AKEL party Demitris Christofias today said that the Greek political leadership has assured him a settlement to the Cyprus problem remains their priority and that relations with Turkey cannot be ironed out unless a settlement in Cyprus is achieved.

    Speaking on his return from Athens today, where he opened AKEL's new office in the Greek capital and met the Foreign Minister and political party officials, Christofias said he briefed George Papandreou on his party's efforts for more contacts between Greek and Turkish Cypriots as well as a recent visit to the Turkish occupied area of Karpasia, the only area where Greek Cypriots continue to live.

    [07] Hungarian MPs - Visit to Cyprus

    Nicosia, Mar 27 (CNA) -- Hungarian MPs visiting the island today expressed their solidarity to the government of Cyprus in its efforts to reunite the country on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, as stipulated for in UN resolutions.

    The four members of the Foreign Affairs Committee, headed by its chairman Itsvan Szent-Ivanyi, discussed with Cypriot officials the island's political problem, the European Union accession course of the two countries and economic relations.

    [08] Book - US consul Cesnola - Cyprus antiquities

    Nicosia, Mar 27 (CNA) -- A 393-page hardback book with black-and-white photographs and documents on the life and work of US consul in Cyprus from 1865- 1876, Luigi Palma di Cesnola, was presented today by the Popular Bank only a few weeks before the opening of four permanent galleries of Cyprus artifacts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York.

    The "Cesnola collection" was bought by the Metropolitan when it was first established in 1880 for 120.000 US dollars, an enormous sum at the time, and today, 125 years later will be housed in the four galleries, restoring the dignity of the antiquities that were in storerooms for so many years.

    [09] Turkish Cypriots - Blood samples - Event

    By Fanitsa Zannettou Nicosia, Mar 27 (CNA) -- Some 300 Turkish Cypriots, including the son of their leader Rauf Denktash and a political party leader, turned up at the UN- controlled Ledra Palace hotel today to give blood samples for six-year-old Greek Cypriot Andreas Vasiliou, in urgent need for a bone marrow transplant.

    The Turkish Cypriots expressed satisfaction with the fact that they were given this opportunity, noting that it is a humanitarian issue and anybody may find themselves in the shoes of the young boy and his family.
