[05] President Clerides - House President - European Green

Parties Meeting Nicosia, Mar 24 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides has described as "promising" for Cyprus' future the fact that environmental issues maintain bridges between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities of the island, in an address to the 9th Meeting of the European Federation of Green Parties which opened today in the south-eastern town of Larnaca.

In his address to the Meeting, House President Spyros Kyprianou stressed that the Turkish occupation of the northern part of the island since 1974 "destroys" the environment in that area.

[06] President Clerides - Cyprus question

Larnaca, Mar 24 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides said here today that the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community has set preconditions in the UN- led proximity talks in order to proceed to direct negotiations.

He explained that Rauf Denktash, backed by Turkey, insists on separate sovereignty for his self-styled regime in Turkish occupied Cyprus before direct negotiations take place, a position contrary to the terms under which the UN have called for the current peace talks. CNA MAN/GG/MM/MA/2000
