    Nicosia, Mar 20 (CNA) -- The President of Germany will visit Greece and Turkey during the first week of April, German Ambassador to Cyprus Peter Wittig said today, reaffirming his country's support to UN-sponsored proximity talks aiming to pave the way for a Cyprus settlement.

    Wittig, who met with President Glafcos Clerides in his capacity as German envoy for Cyprus, said he briefed Clerides on his recent trip to Athens and Ankara, which he described as "interesting" and "encouraging" and assured him he will continue to follow very closely efforts for a settlement on Cyprus.

    [03] Spokesman - EU - Verheugen

    Nicosia, Mar 20 (CNA) - Cyprus expects to see a push in its efforts to join the European Union and a renewed effort to persuade the Turkish Cypriots to participate in the accession negotiations during this week's visit to the island by the top EU official dealing with enlargement, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today.

    The Spokesman also said the EU is now more engaged in attempts to find a negotiated settlement in the Cyprus question, especially after the EU Helsinki summit, and believes the Cyprus problem should be included in Turkey's partnership agreement with Brussels.

    [04] Cyprus - Violations - Protest Nicosia, Mar 20 (CNA) - Cyprus has protested against repeated violations of its national airspace and FIR by Turkish fighters during February and March.

    Charge d' affaires of Cyprus' Permanent Mission in the UN Agis Loizou protested against violations in a letter to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

    [06] President Clerides - Greek attaches

    Nicosia, Mar 20 (CAN) -- The settlement of the Cyprus problem must remain within the framework set by the UN Security Council which provides for a bizonal, bicommunal federation, President Glafcos Clerides said today, receiving a group of new Greek Foreign Ministry attaches, and stressed the importance of cooperation between Cyprus and Greece for promoting a just and viable solution to the problem.

    Clerides said Greek Cypriots are trying to reach a solution "which would safeguard our future in the land of our ancestors and at the same time be functional and viable" taking always into account the parameters set out by the UN Security Council which provide for a federal solution.

    [07] Cyprus Defence Minister - Helicopters

    Athens, Mar 20 (CNA) -- Cyprus Defence Minister Socrates Hasikos who is visiting Greece today said the Republic will soon acquire four additional "Bell" helicopters for its armed forces.

    Hasikos, who is on a four-day visit to Greece, today visited the premises of the "Hellenic Aerospace Industry",accompanied by the members of the island's Defence Parliamentary Committee who are also visiting Greece.
