    [01] Turkish Cypriots - Pilgrimage

    Larnaca, Mar 18 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot pilgrims from the areas of Cyprus, occupied by Turkey since 1974, today visited the Hala Sultan Mosque in Larnaca, on the southern coast, to pray for today's feast of Kurban Bairam (Day of Sacrifice).

    The 1450 pilgrims crossed Ledra Palace's check-point this morning and were transferred by 28 buses to Larnaca. CNA/MAN/RM/MM/2000

    [02] Cook - Cyprus - EU

    Nicosia, Mar 18 (CNA) – British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook has said that a united Cyprus should join the European Union but stressed that a political settlement is no precondition to accession.

    Cook has also made it clear that Cyprus' accession is not linked to that of Turkey.

    [03] Foreign Trade Statistics

    Nicosia, Mar 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus' total imports and trade deficit increased during the period January - December 1999 compared with the respective period of 1998, whilst total exports and re-exports fell.

    According to an official statistic report on Cyprus Foreign Trade, total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) totalled 1.970,9 mn Cyprus pounds as compared with 1.904, 7 mn pounds in 1998, whilst total exports fell to 542, 9 mn pounds from 551, 1 mn pounds in 1998.

    [04] EU - Cyprus - Symposium

    Nicosia, Mar 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus' European accession course and the benefits it will bring to the island were at the core of discussions at a symposium here today on this topic, which attracted persons from the diplomatic, business and political life.

    Most speakers referred to the conclusions of the European Union Helsinki summit, which while noting that a political settlement will facilitate the accession it points out that a settlement is not a precondition for accession.
