    [01] UN Secretary-General - Cyprus - Human rights

    Nicosia, Mar 15 (CNA) - UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said a formal agreement on Cyprus can only be achieved "in comprehensive negotiations directly involving both leaders", in his report on Cyprus to the Commission on Human Rights.

    In the four-page report covering 1999, Annan recalls the last Commission resolution on the issue that calls for the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms of all Cypriots, including the freedoms of movement and settlement and the right to property.

    [03] President Clerides - French National Assembly

    Nicosia, Mar 15 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides today urged the international community to use its influence towards Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership, to give the necessary push for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

    Addressing the Foreign Affairs Committee of the French National Assembly, President Clerides said that preconditions set by Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, for talks on the Cyprus problem did not aim either at the reunification of the island or at the future solution of the problem, but at improving his current position and legalising the status quo.

    [04] Moushouttas - Sri Lankan Labour Minister - Sri Lankan citizens

    Nicosia, Mar 15 (CNA) -- Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Andreas Moushouttas today discussed with the Sri Lankan Minister of Labour D. W. John Seneviratne issues related to citizens from the Asian country who work or study in Cyprus.

    Seneviratne is on a four-day private visit to the island at the invitation of the Consul of Sri Lanka to Cyprus Doros Ieropoulos.

    [05] Cyprus - Uzbekistan - Agreement

    Nicosia, Mar 15 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Uzbekistan today initialled the text of an agreement in the field of air transport, setting the framework for cooperation between the two countries in this sector.

    The agreement, expected to contribute towards developing bilateral relations in the economic and tourist sectors, was initialed by the Permanent Secretary of the Communications and Works Ministry, Vassos Pyrgos, and the Director of the Uzbekistan Airlines Commercial Department, I. Salimov.

    [06] US Navy ship - Limassol

    Nicosia, Mar 15 (CNA) --The US navy ship USS Cape St. George is currently visiting the port of Limassol to give its approximately 380 sailors the opportunity to relax.

    The US Embassy in Nicosia issued a statement saying that the 175-metre guided missile cruiser, the commanding officer of which is Captain Hicks, will not be open for public visits during its stay in Limassol until March 19.

    Nicosia, Mar 15 (CNA) -- US Ambassador to Cyprus Donald Bandler has praised Cyprus for its accomplishments in the effort to turn its economy into a more open and more competitive one.

    Cyprus' Finance Minister Takis Klerides stressed that the island's strategic vision is determined by its aspiration to become a member of the European Union (EU) in the early years of this century.

    [08] President Clerides - President Chirac

    Nicosia, Mar 15 (CNA) --President Glafcos Clerides met today in France with President Jacques Chirac, who reaffirmed his country's support to UN efforts towards a solution to the Cyprus problem.

    An official statement, issued after the meeting, said that today's talks allowed for an even greater understanding between the two countries.
